It's about culture and values.

We live in a materialistic culture that values celebrity and money above all else. People who come into their wealth and power relatively easy and are celebrated wherever they go are going to get drunk on their own egos and arrogance.

Without anything to keep them in check, they are going to indulge themselves as they see fit because they can. They don't really see the rules as applying to them.

Celebrities are the new aristocracy and don't you forget it! Unfortunately for the footballers, unlike the old aristocracy they don't have highly placed relatives and family friends to bail them out when they get caught out doing their nastiness.
