i wear weaves and i do so because i want to. When i was at school i left my hair natural and i used to get all that s**t about 'you have nice hair', stupid ignorant comments like 'are both your parents african?' as the texture was slightly different than other girls (girls only school man...what can i say) - i just told them i looked after my hair and used certain products on my hair. I used to get chicks touching my fully-fluffed afro puff (which used to p**s me off!!!) and people calling me 'pineapple' (my trademark haistyle ).
I started using weaves when i was in college solely because i could have more versatility to a certain degree when it came to certain styles and colours, and also because i was through spending ages doing my hair in the mornings. Whether or not you choose to wear a weave is your business, for me it's nothing to do with wanting to be white or anything. They are so common now, its really not a big deal to me anymore, it's not like im bleaching my skin or having a boob/bum job.
I KNOW it's NOT my hair and i'm only to happy to laugh and joke about it, purely as my weaves despite the length always look 'realistic'-it's not bulky, i choose colours that compliment my dark skin, i choose the right texture (no hawaiian silky business), etc....OHH and i don't do helicopters!!!! I get a lot of comments from women, mostly white women when they say that 'my hair is gorgeous', i just say for about £100 you could have it too, i can hook you up!! Although most are very much aware of weaves as they get extentions done for at least 3 or 4 times what i pay. Again, because they are so common now most sisters with naturally long hair always have people wondering or asking if their hair is real-which would annoy me too if that was me. I'm not that narow minded and have always been one of those chicks that likes to compliment a sister on her hair (health, style) make-up or whatever she may be wearing if something catches my eye.
I guess sooner or later i'll try something else knowing what i'm like. it's all down to personal choice and your lifestyle. I know there are some god awful weaves out there (helmets/hats, convertable tracks, Krusty the clown throwbacks) and i'm only to happy to point them out.
Weave or no weave, i'm still me at the end of the day. banana.gif
