One of the conditions for entering heaven is that a person must have died upon Islam. No matter how good a person may be, if he/she dies upon anything other than Islam then Allah will reward him/her in this life and nothing will be left for the hereafter.
Allah says in the Quran:
And whoever seeks a religion other than Islam, it will never be accepted of him, and in the Hereafter he will be one of the losers.
[Quran 3:85]
Verily, those who disbelieved, and died while they were disbelievers, the (whole) earth full of gold will not be accepted from anyone of them even if they offered it as a ransom. For them is a painful torment and they will have no helpers.
[Quran 3:91]
Allah almighty tells us in the Qur'an he forgives every sin except attributing partners to him.
The pope thought of himself as an intermediary between himself and Allah, thinking he (pope) could choose who is forgiven or not (confession of sins and all that.) This is shirk.
The pope attributed sons and daughters to the unique divinity of Allah, thinking something else could share in Allah's glorious majesty. This is also shirk.
It is clear that, unfortunately, no he will go to hell forever (unless he secretly only believed in Allah alone without any partners.)
It should be noted, that there was a non-Muslim (I forget his name) who was kind to Muslims during the Quraysh persecution of them. After the battle of Badr, the Messenger of Allah, peace be apon him, is reported to have said that he would free all the prisoners for his (the non-Muslims) sake, even though the non-Muslim was going to hell due to his disbelief. I'm taking this on trust of my local Masjid's imam (Catford masjid), so if anybody wants sources I'll have to ask him for them.
I think a similar thing applies to this Pope, and the thoughts we express towards him - nice to us so we nice to him, but God is not so weak and pathetic that He shares characteristics with any man, be that man Jesus peace be apon him or someone else.
