Surprised to hear you, one who is usually quite astute at "getting beneath the surface" , say you give Christie the benefit of the doubt. The only thing I would give Christie is a '"thumps up" for fooling some of the people most of the time!
Look at the end of the day, the pull of the dollar/pound is the big driver that motivates people in ALL walks of life to 'cheat a little here', 'cut the odd corner there' and general doing whatever 'under-handed' deed it takes to give them that little edge.
The way people go on about 'drug cheats' in athletics you would think they are talking about the Devil incarnate. The average person (and certainly the 'Good and Saintly' who feel qualified to pass judgment on the likes of Chambers) use the concept of 'PRINCIPLES' in much the same way the golfer uses his/her golf clubs....... i.e. picking whichever best suits for the occasion. I am talking about people who get all sanctimonious and 'objective' in one instance but can turn a blind eye without flinging when dealing with the same 'PRINCIPLE' in another instance where 'personal' SELF-INTEREST prevails. It kind of makes me glad to see Dwain back to annoy the hell out of they hypocritical asses.
In the same way people distinguish the 'little white lie' from the 'big lie'........as though they fail to see the common 'noun' in both, they can divorce so-called drug cheats from the other forms of cheating that is so rife in this culture; this society. Sebek thinking is strong in these people!
When I have heard people talk about Dwain Chambers as if he were some decease they would not dare wish to be exposed to, I am tempted to ask......"Yeah, and how does his 'crime' compare to the 'minor' oversight of two hours added to your overtime-claim for the last something years?
People make me laugh for real.
Respect
There are those who feel that the only way to ‘prove their own worth’ is by ‘devaluing the worth of others’. You will often find that a man who is compelled to measure his substance against the substance of another, has little of substance in the first place!
