I wouldn't put the blame on him it sounds like he genuinely didn't know. But if the article was about dressing people of different sizes they could have had him posing in an expensive two/three piece suit, in a dignified manner - rather then looking like he's about to savage somebody. Vogue would be familiar with images in the media and they in this case they knew exactly what they were doing.
