He's quite clearly tying to get an insanity verdict so he can serve his sentenee in a mental institution so i wouldn't listen to him. If he had enough intelligence to carry out this crime, hide it from people, build a cellar, convince people his children were his grandchildren etc, then he's intelligent ebough to stand trial as a sane person. He's trying to play the officials.
