Your plants will need light, that mostly defines where I grow my herbs and salads, try using disposable vegetable and fruit containers which usually already have holes. That way you can grow more variety of salad leaves in your kitchen window, I would say you will get at least 4 in a row. You just need good multi purpose compost to plant the seeds, not too deep.
