Creating a continent on the Square
Originally established in 1963 as African Freedom Day, Africa Day falls on 25 May each year. Inspired by the rich tapestry of colours and textures of a continent, Africa Day on Trafalgar Square is a free one-day festival celebrating the positive contributions of London’s
African communities to life in the capital.
Festival highlights will include:
* Live music showcasing the rhythms and instruments of a continent with performances from Miriam Makeba, Pauline Oduro, and the African Jazz All Stars.
* Young faces of Africa! Taste of Africa Food Court providing you with an opportunity to sample a vast array of traditional and popular African dishes such as suya, jollof rice, egusi, fried plaintain, moi moi and kelewele.
* Celebrating Africa! a procession and masquerade with a difference! Organised by The African Families Foundation and featuring some of London's many community-based African hometown associations, women’s organisations and cultural groups.
* Marketplace featuring a range of stalls selling quality arts, crafts, products and much more!
* Café Africa! offering a diverse range of fair trade products and treats!
