First of all, I am surprised that a man of your academic stature writes so poorly.
[At the level of Bachelor one should be speaking and writing well.]
[At the level of Masters one should be speaking and writing expertly.]
[At the level of Doctorate one should be "totally" polished.]
1. I don't find the bible offensive. However, I do find large portions of its contents false and I am equally suspicious of its authorship. The only course of action that most use who are in a self-appointed position to do so ~ is to point right back to its contents in a loooooong branch of cyclic rotal recall of its contents while adding other books that bogusly support its conclusions~~that's not scholarly!
2. Pre-filtered Christianity is about as realistic as it's ever going to get for most mis-informed Christians who choose to reject specific portions of the bible to follow or ignore while conversely turning up their collective noses at other passages based on how it suits their own personal interests.
A. There are Christians who fornicate because they wish to do so.
B. There are Christians who cuss because they consciously choose to do so.
C. There are Christians who get divorced and remarry and remarry and remarry if they desire to do so.
D. There are Christians who shack up together because they want to do so.
E. There are Christians who steal office supplies and office time because they can do so.
F. There are Christians who alter the truth on their taxes because they option to do so.
G. There are Christians who watch elicit movies because they are attracted to do so.
"Convenience of action" is the operative choice of Christians who traverse thru a self-proclaimed set of rules and regulations as they go about the business of GOD worship. They see no harm in following rules or not following rules that do or do not fit their own personal agendas, desires or wishes.
a. A rule book is needed for the unGOdly but what use is it if they do not follow those rules by the letter.
b. A rule book is not needed for those ~on the other hand~ who have developed a tested, tried and true set of "principles" that are centuries old ~~that will not die or be killed.
This type of person knows the importance of developing a personal relationship with GOD.
This type of person puts GOd first and foremost and uses "no" proxy.
The sole intent of Christians is to use this book as a dagger to condemn others; while lacking the spiritual strength to follow its precepts themselves.
