I don't believe that you should only drink when you're thirsty; I've heard that when you're thirsty it's your body is telling you you're already dehydrated.
I don't really get "thirsty", unless I exert myself (I think my thirst alert is broke) so I have to keep track of how much I'm drinking or I wouldn't get enough water a day to maximally benefit my body.
