we know that places all over East, north, and west africa had rich cities, organised forms of govt and were wealthy..so what happened that caused the decline, because it is probably fair to say that at the time of the european arrival in Africa this decline had already been in full swing in most parts of the continent,
so what happened during those years that Historians will say was the major cause of the decline.

This is such a strange question to me. You are talking about "Africa" as a European would.
So I ask you, what does "Africa" mean in a pre-colonial context???? What you are really talking about is a tribal history and context. I know some of the history of pre-colonial Nigerian tribes and the tribes were thriving as I recall.
And by the way the Europeans did not arrive with colonization. They were there long before...I know that in Edo history, Europeans had contact with the Benin Empire as far back as the 14th century.
I agree the Arabs had more to do with African pre-colonial history than the Europeans.
