Default Help Please? - 18-10-07, 07:24 PM

Hey, im currently in my first year at university studying media&communication. I have to find a work placement in the field of media and im having a bit of trouble finding anything !
At first i thought i should try places like The Voice/Young Voice etc, but since ive had no reply i think i started to big!?
I dont know of many small media related businesses so i was wondering if anyone could help me get in contact with some. The kind of places im looking for are radios stations/newspapers/magazines etc. I live im birmingham but im willing to travel if needs be.
Thanks

1. Have you asked the people who run the degree course that you are on, and if so, what did they say?

2. Has it occurred to you to simply use the internet to search for suitable media organisations? If so, what was the result?

3. What exactly is meant by "At first i thought i should try places like The Voice/Young Voice etc, but since ive had no reply i think i started to big!?". How many organisations have you actually contacted?

4. Is grammar still taught in schools or universities, and are you confident that your grammatical skills are currently sufficient to secure employment in any media organisation?

5. What do people studying "media&communication" actually study and for what purpose or to what end?

1) The tutors at the University said to only go to them as a last resort, and ideally the work experience should be somewhere not related to the universities own media projects (it has a radio station and weekly newspaper).

2) I have used the internet and I am still currently looking I just thought I should ask people on this forum. A lot of students I’ve talked to in the second year have either had contacts (a friend of a friend that works for a small newspaper etc) or have ended up doing some 'last resort' work experience and didn’t gain anything worthwhile from it.

3) Vie contacted several by e-mail and letter but so far I've had no luck. Ideally I would like to find a 'black organization' another reason why I thought this forum was a good place to ask for help.

4) Yes grammar is still taught in school but I am in a bad habit of not using any grammar (and usually abbreviations) on forums or while I’m talking on the internet. Furthermore grammar issues is the least of my worries but thank you for pointing it out to me- in the future ill be more aware of 'impression' I leave to older people on the internet when I don’t use correct grammar and spelling.

5) My course consists of practical and theory modules, the practical modules are things such as photography, television production, radio production, visual design etc. The theory for me is had to explain as I am only in my third week, but it’s similar to cultural studies. For example asking questions like 'Does violence in video games cause violence in children'

I'm aware a lot of people think any course to do with 'media' is pointless compared to a 'normal' degree in law or medicine but I definitely didn’t choose it as an easy option, in fact the course is proving a lot harder then I anticipated.

* Presumably, students on this course have had to find placements every year that it has run. Where have they gone? Have those media outlets now ceased to exist?

* What responses have you received from local media in Birmingham and the surrounding area?

* Why would people on this forum have greater knowledge or be better placed to give advice than the professionals in the media field who actually teach on the degree?

* What you have described as the course content sounds more like a weekend hobby than the subject matter of 3 years' study at university. Are you sure that you would not be better off undertaking a course of study in something that teaches how to write properly, study and undertake scientific research and reasoning? You can learn how to use a camera at the weekend.

Its okay, i understand why you think its a 'mickymouse' in terms of being useful for getting a job in the future and your right!
In terms of 'im just learning about things people could learn at the weekend' your wrong. I mean you tell me what semiology is all about. Also tell me where im going to get the opportunity to use £10000 avid editing suites or DSLR cameras worth £100's

p.s. on one hand your tellling me my grammer isnt up to scratch like im totally dumb, on the other hand your telling my im doing a waste of time course ! i mean make your mind up, if my grammatical skills aint no good then obivously im not clever enough to do any 'real' course. A course that spends three years teaching me what you can learn at the weekend may be all im capable of !
