Wow! Intriguing points. Interestingly enough, I searched youtube the other day for videos about “media & race” and stumbled across a few very interesting videos about why Asian women are into white men. According to some video-bloggers, this is a huge trend. I am left wondering, what historical developments made Asian women more prone to date white men than Black women? And now, you have added to this, what might make African women, born and raised in Africa, more likely to date white men? These are big questions that I am not foolish enough to believe I can answer. Nonetheless, I have heard from immigrant women to America that white men treat them better than the men of their own cultural group. Of course, if your standard for “good treatment” has been shaped by the western values you held in high regard back home, you may have a weak spot for the men whom you believe embody those values the most. Attraction, and dare I add, security, are conditions that exist behind the eyes and between the ears.

Your input is appreciated. In this world of competing agendas the evolution of the Black woman, at least in America has been glossed over. Nonetheless, she is obviously a key to understanding the African Diaspora in America.

The origin of all western psychological theory is grounded in the paradigm: “childhood experiences shape adult perspectives.” It is the enduring contribution of the father of modern psychology himself, Sigmund Freud. The vast majority of psycho-therapists and psychiatrists all begin treatments with questions about childhood, parents, feelings, your birth order or “rank,” whether or not you feel your needs were met as a child, etc, etc. I first learned about this practice through an Introduction to Psychology class. I have long since discarded the book. My wife, however, is a therapist and suggests you google “Psychoanalytic theory,” “Psychodynamic theory,” and Bowenian Theory. Have fun.

Lastly, if there be any doubt about my reference to these “volumes,” I do not believe that we should just take the academic word of whites (even well-intentioned ones). Just because they have pioneered research, that does not mean that we should simply adopt it carte blanche. Quite the contrary, we must recognize that all white social-scientific research was developed on the premise that Eurocentric values and mindsets represent standards upon which all others are measured. As their world-view is a standard, all other views are deemed to be “deviations.” I am no “deviation.” All things considered, every culture needs qualified mental health professionals to conduct research, document findings and develop culture specific psychological paradigms, and therapeutic treatments..
