Single Mothers should be Sterilized? -
13-04-08, 06:22 PM
Posted April 9, 2008 – The NAACP Tuesday condemned comments from a member of the Charleston County (S.C.) School Board who said that teen mothers and unmarried women who have more than one child should either be sterilized or have subsequent children removed from their custody. We're not standing up as people and saying that we've had enough of that,” she told the host. “We're not paying for another baby, maybe one baby, but after that, we're taking the baby. And maybe you get sterilized. I know that sounds kind of extreme and radical, but we're in times to where — think about America . When is it OK for America not to be No. 1? When did we get out of that?"
Nelson B. Rivers, III, who runs the NAACP’s field operations, called the comments offensive.
“Her words are especially insulting coming from a female in the American South, where poor women were once involuntarily sterilized and often labeled as ‘unfit mothers’ because of their color or economic class,” he said.
Cook says that her words, which she said as a private citizen and not as a counselor or school board vice chairwoman, have been taken out of context.
Lonnie Randolph, Jr., president of the NAACP’s South Carolina State Conference, said, “An experienced politician and servant of the people should know better than to use such divisive words. It is regrettable that a public official who derives her livelihood from families in transition, and is sworn to serve the highest interests of children and families. should appear to hold such contempt for them. They deserve better. Every decent caring citizen must expect better.”
The association wants Cook to recant her remarks and seek sensitivity training, “where she can fully understand why they were egregious and hurtful.” It would also like for the school board to denounce her comments and reprimand Cook.

Only the best is good enough....

I disagree. It reminds me of what the Chinese did to women who had more than one kid in their country. I've also have read horror stories taken place where women--Black women more specifically, where forcefully sterilized without their knowledge( happended to Black women in the early years and as recently in the 1980's in North Carolina. It's cruel and in humane. On top it, not all single mothers are stereotypical "baby mamas". I came from a single parent back ground. My mother struggled to the point where my brother had to care for my sister and I --at 12 years old--, while my mother had to work, while my father decided that he had no need for hid family. She didn't ask to be single, it just happened. My mother had to get a hysterectomy because of a fibroid tumor, but if she had a chance to keep her reproductive organs and was able to have children, I would NEVER , EVER want her to be sterilized! She's a human being, not and experimental lab rat. I will guarantee that if this proposal was to come out, Black women will be victimized by it and I have the strangest feeling that they would do it to women who aren't the welchers like so many of them were in NC.

Our society is screwed up not the people.
People are meant to have sex and breed. Before 'modern' society that's what we did. No policy, or contrived social structure will change the natural order of things.
Not every single 'mother' is a single 'mother'. When couples decide to stay together the system makes it HARDER on them if they are poor.
If govt and monetary policies were structured different this would not be an issue.
What about all the families who take fertility drugs to have kids and end up having 5 - 7 and have people from all over sending them donations to help with the kids? Why attack poor people for doing the same thing?
I mean really.

You think the rich white folk of the States will allow themselves or their children to be sterilized?

I don't think they should be sterilized. That would be a lot of girls. Our entire population would be wiped out.

You can't forcibly sterilise a person, that's serious assault! Conversely you can't go on producing offspring if yourself and / or a partner cannot provide for those children. Nobody has the moral right to be so irresponsible - to expect to not only not to support themselves but to then bring a number of children into the world for someone else to finance as well.
Some good state subsidised creche facilties would mean that nobody could claim that they can't work at all because they have a family to look after - let the children be cared for while the parent(s) go and earn!

That's very sick ..
Live life for you, not nobody else.... don't live under pressure from others just to satisfy their ideals about you .... you only live once, you only have one life, it's yours not anyone else's !
