Interesting!

I've always took Maroon to mean of Black & Indian descent. Here it says it means:

NOUN:

  1. often Maroon
    1. A fugitive Black slave in the West Indies in the 17th and 18th centuries.
    2. A descendant of such a slave.
  2. A person who is marooned, as on an island.

Try: http://www.jamaicans.com/info/jahistory/maroons.shtml

or http://ca.geocities.com/toellis/culture.htm

instead of whatever you are looking at.

Good luck.
