For those who do not know, "Alkebu-lan" is the oldest name forthe land we now call Africa. It was used by Nile Valley Africans, especially the Upper Nile (Nubia) and present-day Ethiopia. FYI, the name "Africa" is Greek, and was not a name given to it by Africans.

So what do you call a person from Akebulan? Alkebulanian? Alkebulani? Alkebu?

The reason I ask is because I am trying to make a conscious effort to stop using the word "Africa" if possible. Your views are appreciated, especially if their are any East or Northeast Africans who might have some idea of the etymology and/or a proper use. Hotep...

Shem the first time I came across the terms was in Black Man of the Nile many decades ago. Jochannon mentioned that was the oldest term for Africa or I would suggest signficant parts of it. Because to my knowledge there has never ever been a prevailing and shared name for the whole continent as regional and geographical identities were more stronger if we move beyond kinship and clan as organising principles.

Personally then and now I do not see much value in reusing those terms even if they were widely shared which I do not believe they were actually. Labels have to be lived in and through for them to be real and form the basis of identity on any meaningful level and in the specific one you cite shared through common or similar languages.

So that is a leap to big for me to make and even more fragile for me to intellectually defend or advance.

Peace.

There is a brother on this site named Uza who refers to "Africans" as the Arkeburani so I think it would be good if you checked with him. I agree. Africa is a term we should irradicate. We cannot go for the rest of our time on this planet being named by caucasians. If you call "Egypt" Kemet then you should call "Africa" Alkebu-Lan.

PM the brother and see.

I've never seen any serious work that has come near proving, Afrika is not a name indigenous to the continent. Until such time, I won't be giving no European culture the honor of being the term's originator.

These people have "discovered" and named enough as it is.
