Guinea Bissau PM Meets with Cuban Veterans

Havana, Jan 31 (ACN) Guinea Bissau Prime Minister, Aristides Gomes, met Tuesday evening in Havana with Cuban veterans who fought for the independence of his African nation.

Gomes highlighted the participation of the Cubans, not only in the struggle for freedom, but also in the building of the nation. He said: "To us you are Guineans," reported Granma newspaper.

The meeting was also attended by Cubans that have cooperated in Guinea Bissau, personalities that helped in the quest for the freedom of that country and 14 Cuban internationalist veterans who narrated their experiences in the fight against the Portuguese colonialists.

These included Manuel Agramonte, who later became Cuba's first representative there, and Ulises Estrada who highlighted the fraternal relations that had existed with Guinean independence leader Amilcar Cabral. Estrada said that although they are no longer young, they are all "in full disposition to fight again if necessary for their Guinea Bissau brothers and sisters."

Earlier in the day, the prime minister of Guinea Bissau, accompanied by Cuban deputy Foreign Affairs Minister Marcos Rodriguez, placed a reef of flowers at Havana's Colon Cemetery at the graves of the Cubans that gave their lives fighting for the independence of African countries.

In a short statement to the press, Prime Minister Gomes affirmed that Guinea Bissau will never forget the attitude of the Cuban internationalist combatants in Africa, and those who died in that epic quest.

"This is something that unites us forever. It's the common ground of identity between Cubans and Guineans," he said.

Also on Tuesday, the statesman met with the African Diplomatic Corps in Cuba and toured the facilities of the LABIOFAM Biological and Pharmaceutical Laboratories.
