Dr. Patrick Wilmot

I attended Yale University in the US, I was a classmate of John Kerry. I was more intelligent than John Kerry. I was two years ahead of George Bush who is now the President of the United States. My Intelligence Quotient doubled that of George Bush. I was more dynamic and charismatic. I also had more leadership abilities. So if I wanted to make money, I should have stayed in the United States. I never changed my visa from student visa so that I can stay in the US. I never asked for US citizenship. I came to teach in Nigeria and went to the Ahmadu Bello University, not even the most famous university at the time. There were universities of Ibadan, Ife and Nsukka. I went to ABU and taught my students and it became one of the best universities in the whole of Africa because people like myself and many of my colleagues were dedicated. Instead of allowing the students to memorise things, we taught them to ask questions and the students learnt a lot because that is the way you develop a mind. You must question your teacher and all your ambition must be to better your teacher; not to be equal with your teacher. And I appreciated everything the students did in terms of criticizing me. That is why many of them are occupying very high positions in the society today.

Jeff Crawford - Activist (1932 - 2003)

Born at Ellerton in St George's, Barbados, and educated at Combermere, one of the leading schools in the island, he came to Britain in 1955, making his name as Secretary of the Standing Conference of West Indians, set up in the wake of the Notting Hill "race riots" in 1958. In the early 1960s he played a leading role in Brockley International Friendship Association of south-east London. Later in the decade, as founder of the Caribbean Teachers' Association and chairman of the North London West Indian Association, he fought on the issue of schools for the "educationally subnormal" and the bussing of black students.

The harmony and justice he sought to bring about did not come easily. Crawford became known nationally for organising the successful picketing to persuade London Transport to promote black bus conductors. He was prominent, too, in the campaign in 1966 which led to the overturning of the NUR ban on black workers at Euston station. This is seen as a landmark towards the passing of race- relations legislation.

Picture speak a thousand words .
We need now to control the film media and tell more of our story in films .Like music no can challenge us in the department .There is a Hollywood and a Bollywood but no Diaspora wood .Yes there is B.E.T . B.E.T should franchise to all black country and place themselves on the net for more accessibility but with no form of payment .Blacxploitation in the pass was a joke but that joke was because we told the story and even if was ridiculous it came from we. Example we was the on who decide that has was to be worn back to front .

Going off in a tangent the day when I will be really happy is when a black(NEGRO) lead country has nuclear weapons in Africa and has only allegiance to Africa and the Diaspora .

If we do not have an accurate analysis of the problem, we cannot possibly develop a good strategy to resolve it.

Marimba Ani - Warrior Scholar

After having traveled in Afrika, Marimba Ani (born "Dona Richards") began formal study of the nature of Afrikan Civilization, focusing on the "deep thought" which underlies its fundamental common cultural themes and the varying constructs of Afrikan social organization. She has done extensive work on Afrikan spiritual conceptions and systems. She is using her articulation of the Afrikan world view as a frame of reference from which to critique European cultural thought, and to construct paradigms for Pan-Afrikan reconstruction.

"We must be able to separate our thought from European thought, so as to visualize a future that is not dominated by Europe. This is demanded by an African-centered view because the future towards which Europe leads us is genocidal."

Marimba Ani

I'm glad we are making progress in North America. This shows-up the UK for what it is. A Racist unforgiving segregated place. I am also happy the many of us are leaving and going back home with success.

Keith Forde Deputy Chief Toronto Police Service:

Keith Forde, Public Administration '91, is living proof that determination, hard work and a passion for your job will take you far. Last summer, Keith, a 34-year veteran of the Toronto Police Service (TPS), became the force's first African-Canadian Deputy Chief.

One of four people appointed to the rank, Keith oversees the human resources command of the 473-member service. His goal? "To make the TPS one of the best police forces in the world, an organization of excellence."

That desire to effect change is Keith's calling card. Originally from Barbados, he came to Canada in 1969. He fulfilled a childhood dream in 1972 when he became a police officer with the TPS. "In Barbados, the neighbourhood police and their relationship with the community had a significant impact on me. They knew everyone by first name, were welcomed in everybody's homes and were widely admired and appreciated."

Michaelle Jean Canadas first black Governor General:

Michaëlle Jean, born September 6, 1957, in Port-au-Prince, Haiti is the current Governor General of Canada. Jean was appointed by Queen Elizabeth II, on the recommendation of Prime Minister Paul Martin, to succeed Adrienne Clarkson and become the 27th governor general of Canada since Confederation in 1867. Prior to this, Jean was a journalist and broadcaster on Radio-Canada and the CBC. She is the first black Canadian to serve as Governor General, the third woman, and the second immigrant.

JANE MATILDA BOLIN
(1908 - 2007)

Jane Bolin was the first black woman to become a judge in the United States. Judge Bolin was the first black woman to graduate from Yale Law School, the first to join the New York City Bar Association, and the first to work in the office of the New York City corporation counsel, the city's legal department. Her father, Gaius C. Bolin, was the son of an American Indian woman and an African-American man. Her mother, the former Matilda Emery, was a white Englishwoman. She attended Wellesley College, where she was one of two black freshmen.

At her graduation in 1928, she was named a Wellesley Scholar, a distinction given to the top 20 students of the class. At Yale Law School, Ms. Bolin was one of three women in her class and the only black person. In 1937 she was hired by the NYC Corporation Counsel. In 1939 she was appointed a Family Court Judge by Mayor LaGuardia for a 10 year term. She was reappointed to 10 year terms by Mayors O'Dwyer, Wagner and Lindsay. She served until 1978 when she reached the mandatory retirement age of 70.

After her retirement, she was a volunteer reading instructor in New York City public schools for two years, and was appointed to the Regents Review Committee of the New York State Board of Regents. Judge Bolin is survived by her son, Yorke Mizelle.

Phillis Wheatley (1753 - 1784)

Phillis Wheatley was born around 1753 in Gambia, Africa. She was caught by slave traders and sold to John Wheatley, a tailor from Boston, on July 11, 1761. Her name was chosen by the owners and named after the ship which carried her to America, The Phillis. She was taught to read by one of Wheatley's daughters, Mary, and studied English, Latin and Greek before beginning to write poetry in 1767. Her first poem, On the Death of George Whitefield, was published in 1770.
