Default Nubians...What Your Real Name? - 03-07-08, 09:36 PM

I hope this doesn't come off as offensive to anyone, but I'm curious if the Afrikans who consider themselves "Nubians" call themselves by any other indigenous name since the term is pseudo-Afrikan?

You probably thinking, what am I going on about this time. Here's the brief history behind the word "Nubian". In ancient times, the word for gold in ancient Egypt was nwb. The gold mines were located in the area we commonly refer to as Nubia, but in those times it was called either Wawat or Senmwt (I get confused with the name of Kush). When the Arabs invaded the Nile Valley, they also knew where the gold was and referred to the land as "Nubia" which just means "land of gold". Likewise, the Afrikans living in what is today Northern Sudan were called "Nubians".

I wonder if the Nubians have another name they denote themselves as since it is more Arab influenced, although still of an Afrikan root.

It was so long ago, does it even matter anymore?
