Just wondered how many Sistas out there make essential oils a regular part of their daily life.
Apart from being crucial in treating various ailments and minor injuries, essential oils can enhance the atmosphere of a room....or if illness prevails...help Beat the Bugs.
A friend of mine was recently worried about her aged Mother who had to go to Hospital for hip replacement surgery. My friend was worried that her Mother may contract one of these new Superbugs in the hospital.
I advised her to purchase a simple plastic plant spray bottle..(£1 from pound shop) Fill it with natural still spring water. Add 10 drops of Lavender oil, 10 drops of Rosemary oil, and 10 drops of Teatree oil. I told her to spray this around her Mother;s bed area and to get her Mother and/or any other visitors to do the same. My friend was amazed that the lady in the bed next to her Mother was doing exactly the same thing. Most French hospitals used to burn Rosemary oil on the wards as a natural disinfectant.
I would advise anyone interested in aromatherapy to read as much as possible on the subject, because these oils are potent and very powerful. For instance...Clary Sage is a wonderful oil and works very well on calming distressed nervous problems. But it must never be used in conjunction with alcohol as it can induce very bad nightmares. So if you;ve been massaged with it, or just used it in an oil burner to fragrance a room...be aware no wine/spirits that evening.
Another warning for pregnant women. Sage oil carries a toxin that can be very dangerous for pregnancy. Some oils are known as emmanagogue and can cause contractions of the uuterus/womb thus bringing on spontaneous miscarraige. So its wise to know exactly what you;re doing with the oils.
On a lighter note it is delightful to blend oils together and use them in an oil burner to fragrance a room. Here is a recipe for a gorgeous Xmas time fragrance
To the small bowl of water add 3 drops of ginger oil
3 drops of cinnamon oil
3 drops of orange oil
1 or 2 drops of nutmeg...or patchouli if you love it.
This burned in an oil burner gives a delightful Yuletime aroma to your home. I use this one All Winter.
A good tip is to change the water again once you;ve used at least 2 nightlights...or you tend to get a used flava to the aroma.
As its also Flu-season a good one for Living room and bedroom at night-time is..
3 drops of Rosemary oil
3 drops of Lavender oil
3 drops of Teatree oil
Topped up with water and placed on oil burner.
Any other suggestions or recipes anyone?

@Locsgirl
Interesting thread and I am glad you raised these points. Now from the Caribbean upbringing I always use pine when cleaning the house also pine is a good oil to use to ward of insect/bugs especially mosquitoes they do not like pine. When I clean the house I like to put some drops of pine oil in a little water and spray it around the house or in the water as I clean the floor boards.
I put a few drops of oil on the light bulbs in my home when the bulbs warm up it gives the room a lovely aroma, this is a simple technique and you don't need to go out and buy expensive oil burning devices only 1 or 2 drops on the light bulb.
Now and then I change the scent I must have my kitchen smelling of pine or lemon and it has to be patchouli in the bathroom that scent is so fresh and cleanand I like Lavender in the living room but it has to be a nice musk in the bedroom. Also a few drops of peppermint in hot water and left in the room is good especially at this time of year with all the flue symptons it helps you breath better.
I may come back a little later with some more.niceone.gif

Mmmmm(sorry Lucas) Bet your home smells Divine! That was a good tip about the lightbulbs tooblkthumbsup
Ylang Ylang is good for the bedroom...very sexy aroma.
Another sexy aroma that men seem to Love is cinnamon. I always put a few drops of cinnamon oil in with the olive oil I use on my skin before and after bathing. Studies have shown that men become very aroused at womens perfumes that contain cinnamon. Probably thinking of home-made spiced banana cake I expect.....
Yes I;d love to hear some more from you later....

Thank you, yes I have been told constently that my home smells refreshing and pleasant.
Girl you use cinnamon too ha ha my mama told all her daughters about that when we became young ladies and her mama taught her. I love a few drops of rose water on my linen and when bathing use a few drops of natural almond oil in the water to maintain the softness of the skin.
Where do you get most of your oils from I usually buy mines from and they do deliveries too.
http://www.baldwins.co.uk
All those oils you have previously mentioned I have them so I will try out the festive seasoncocktail you mentioned above. I also make my own pouporrie (spelling) dried flowers/dried lemon/lime and orange skin/ cloves/ bay leaves and some nut shells help contain the scent of the oils aswell like pistachio...I particulary find the skin of oranges from the caribbean the best to dry the green oranges. I even put cinnamon sticks/cloves and bay leaves in aswell depending on the type of mix I am making, it is so easy to make your own.

Ok so we must be the only two Sistas on here who think essential oils are essential...blksadbounce
Never mind eh...we got nice smelling homes!niceone.gif
Your pot pourri sounds delightful. Tell you what else I do. I get a cotton face pad and use a few drops of Lavender, Peppermint, Rosemary, Geranium and I stick that in the hoover bag. Longer its in there stronger it gets...well till the dust collects too much. Room smells lovely after hoovering!
Used to be a shop I got my oils from locally and they gave me huge Therapist discount. Now they;ve closed down so I order from Internet Amphora Aromatics, and they deliver free if you order over £50. It works out I;m paying less than I was with other shop, and I share my order with a friend so thats good.
Ok need to put this child of mine to bed and burn some serious sleeping oils......blksnore

Yes I Love peppermint oil. If you add just one drop to any combination that you mix in an oil burner it gives a very interesting twist to the aroma.
Also another good one for a romantic/sensual flava is Rose oil, or Rose Geranium mixed with a few drops of Patchouli. Its Heavenly! blkthumbsup

Hey Locsgirl. Hmm no ur not the only ones.
At the momnet my fav is bergamont. I brought a bottle about 2 weeks ago and its nearly finished already! Got a few more drops left. I tried that trick you mentioned about putting an oil in olive oil to make it smell nice and the rubbing loads on and getting into the bath. Ummmmmmmmm, is all I can say. Thankyou niceone.gifI also put loads on my hair and combed it thru and then washed it after a hour or so! Very good idea!
The smell of a room makes a huge difference. If my room smells nice its 100times more relaxing and calm. I have candles burinng in there almost all the time now. The smell of a good oil and candles is a great environment to study in I have found. It really helps focus and enoyment!
So yes I find essential oils very essential. My mum has always burnt them and my aunty is a reflexoligist so has a van load of them! Well actually a shelf! She gets them from work for free so often makes one up for me in a base oil.
Its amazing how stimualting partiular senses in certain ways, has such lovely effects. blkexercise

One of the Best oils to use when you;re studying is Rosemary. It really stimulates the ol grey matter! You may have to burn some Lavender afterwards though to get you drowsy enough to sleep!
My Tutor at college recommended it and it really does work.niceone.gif

Hi babes good to see you back hope all is going well with the studying.
@Lalia
Thanks for that link I am still browsing through it to see if they are that much different from Baldwins where I shop from......the only big difference I can see right now is the price after I convert $ into £ it seems Uk is cheaper.
@Locsgirl
You know I can't stress enough how much I love Patchouli.....do you have a favourite oil?
@ You all
I quite agree with Olive oil and other oils such as Almond etc......in fact Locsgirl own cyber hubby quoted in another thread something very important if you can put it on our face/skin then it shouldn't go in your hair. I liked that comment because I always went by the theory of if you wouldn't use it on a baby then don't use it on yourself in terms of products you use on your skin or hair.niceone.gif

Yes likewise my own personal favourite is and always has been Patchouli. When I was a teenager I used it as a perfume and my Mother Hated it. When she did the laundry and ironed my clothes she would gag on it. In those days Patchouli seemed a lot rawer than it does now, or maybe we just got used to it. When she visits me now she always remarks on how lovely the place smells, but I;m still using it. I blend it with a lot of other oils, so maybe thats why she can now handle it. I put it in the olive oil I use on my hair, and I put it in the oil I use on my skin.
I also Love rose oil but its hideously expensive, so I tend to go for Rose Geranium which is also lovely. I also adore Ylang Ylang, but again I will add that drop or two of Patchouli to it niceone.gif
