The full article is in the Open Forum (thanks DSP)..

Essence:
I’m interested in what you expressed as the need to be a whole woman. I find that for many Black women, it’s a struggle to be accepted in a society that seems to be incapable of making space for our intelligence, beauty and strength. It’s almost expressed as a liability. Like you’ll never find happiness because you’re too dope.

Hill: It’s really about the Black woman falling in love with her own image of beauty. I know that I’ve been in a fight to love myself and experience reciprocity in a relationship. I thought that a perfectly reciprocal relationship was an impossibility. That’s that “Black woman is the mule of the world thing. It says she can’t get what she deserves, no matter how dope she is. And, you know, you have to go through the fear. You do have to do something with the insecurity, ghosts and demons that have been programmed in us for centuries. You have to master the voices, all the insecure and inadequate men who put garbage in a woman’s mind, soul, spirit and psyche just so they can use her. You’ve got to break free of that crap. I didn’t see many of the women who came before me fight that war successfully. And when you don’t see it, you don’t know if it can be done. But that’s what faith is for.

I just think this statement had to be highlighted from the rest of the interview as it is so relevant. These are words of wisdom.

Isn't there junk in your head that you would like to rid yourself of?

This is similar to the 'what do you aspire to be' thread but it is a lesson we all should at least be aware of.

So, was she saying that this is the kind of stuff that laid behind the misfortunes in her own life?

Did she put the choices she made about her own relationships (e.g. the man/men she allowed into her life) down to stuff like the fear, insecurity, ghost and demons that had been programmed into her?

So when is she going to get past just having faith I wonder. When is she going to know that she can overcome whatever she is trying to overcome.

isn't it faith (personal belief in you or something higher) that you need/allows you to overcome your demons/misconceptions in order to become a whole woman.. thought she did answer the question..

what else is there to have or be? confused3

I thought this topic was a non-starter, I just noticed the responses.
I can't find DSP's original post. Here is the article: http://laurynet.com/index.php?s=d9e7...c=660&st=0

Yes

Everyone has their own experiences. I think that she wanted answers and found the ones that suited her and the things she specifies here make sense to a certain extent. It's all about personal development, learning from our mistakes but what she points out to be demons are the things that most women know are there but many don't have the motivation to tackle. But you know many people feel the need to justify everything in their lives and it's hard to accept that there aren't always answers to our questions. To quote Johnny Nash, "There are more questions than answers!" I don't think too much procrastination is a healthy thing.
