Cool Women..don't throw me under the bus but...... - 15-04-08, 09:48 PM

I have been meaning to ask for a long while now those women who wear weaves and feel bvrave enough i have a question... are you aware when your weave begins to give off an odour? I was sat next to a weave wearer in the office the other day and even at two feet away i could smell the obour of the weave even at two/three feet away.. I've been on trains especially when its been raing and been subjected to the same strong odour..

If i can smell it surely the wearer can smell it too...what do you do..or isn't obvious or embarrassing? I'm not trying to be funny, but like i said the other day i spent literally the whole dy next to this woman and was unbearabl, i was almost trying not to breath in... so god knows how she coped or pretended not to notice?

I can understand not being able to smell oneself as it is easy to become accustomed to any odor just about, but something I've never been able to wrap my mind around is how some women (those who stretch the days, weeks, months) not washing their hair cannot SEE the huge dandruff curds forming in their scalp and roots like someone dashed cottage cheese pon their head.

@ K - LOL!

She just doesnt wash her hair often enough. If she were wearing her own natural locks I am sure it would stink also.

I dont think the weaves themselves give off an odour - its just personal hygiene.

a smelly weave is the lack of maintenance
if its kept in that long and no shampoo touches scalp it will smell
bacteria sweat etc equals odour

but yeah her maintenance needs tending to

K - do the girl a favour, TELL HER! Maybe she doesn't realise.

I don't know anyone who washes their hair everyday, some natural/relaxed haired women don't wash often and even then they don't use shampoo, only conditioner.

But this girl sounds nasty for real because even though the weave has the chemicals which would make it smell worse or different than natural hair when wet or dirty, if she washes fortnightly it shouldn't be as you described LOL!

Well she can't possibly have a man coz there's no way he could get next to that and not say something??/,I dont care how how good the poontang is.

I've never experienced the odour you speak of with weave wearers but I have seen some shocking dandruff and product build up...and you want to say something but you cant...I would with a friend though, none of my friends wear weaves but some do sport braids and if I see their scalps looking a little off-key im on them like white on rice!

Hair needs to be washed at least once a week, even if you dont shampoo it,it needs to be rinsed, too many of us go for weeks without because we think we can and sometimes we can get away with it,but if you want healthy hair,it needs moisture ie-washing,clean scalp etc, your hair is not gonna thrive in a disgusting environment no matter what you've been told.
And I have a healthy head of thick natural hair..dare I say long?? without bringing out the haters,lol... to prove it.

The weave shouldn't be worn at all period. I don't know about the smell (although I can imagine it) but some don't even know how to maintain what they have. I swear I've seen more roots in the past week than Alex Haley.

K its nothing to do with the weave, the woman's nasty. chapter. i have a friend who wears weave all the time to the point where i've NEVER seen her natural hair. I'm 31 and have known this woman, who'se a bit older since i was 20! She lets it grow out so that her roots are inches long and once we went on holiday and after some time i realised but wait this woman hasn't washed her hair once, and we've been in nearly 40degree heat for days, and been swimming in the hotel pool and the sea. Not even after the pool would she wash it. One day we were going out so she was trying to comb out the stank tangled dutty weave and the amount of crud that was being combed out made me feel physically sick. i told her to wash it (many times) but she would just skin teeth and tell me how because its not her hair she don't have to look after it like natural hair. I could smell the her hair from the other bed in the hotel. Nevertheless, she would spend big money on clothes, shoes, showered twice a day, good perfume, its just like she didn't see the weave as being part of her cleaning routine. all kinds of wrong.

Babygirl, your friend is a good example of why i see too many sisters with hideously dirty hair. She is right in saying that she doesn't really has to look after it because it's not really hers! But whats sad is this, if something is not yours, then why are you RELIGIOUSLY wearing it on your head for YEARS?

It's not just women with weave. Some black women have this twisted notion that their hair is going to fall out if they wash it more than once a month. I have a friend who seriously believes this and is constantly arguing with me about it. The girl will put grease and gel and all sorts of things on her hair everyday and yet only wash her hair once a month. She claims that dirt makes her hair grow but her hair has been the same length for years and she's not one for haircuts. Luckily it doesn't smell but I don't even wanna know how it feels like after a month of not washing it.
