Islam's Black Slaves: The History of Africa's Other Black Diasporaby ronald segal.....has anyone read this or any other similar titles. (amazon reccomends this with Destruction of Black Civilisation: Great Issues of a Race from 4500BC to 2000AD)

Synopsis
This work tells the fascinating and horrifying story of the Islamic slave trade. It documents a centuries-old institution that still survives, and traces the business of slavery and its repercussions from Islam's inception in the 7th century, through its history in China, India, Iran, Turkey, Egypt, Libya and Spain, and on to Sudan and Mauritania, where, even today, slaves continue to be sold. Segal reveals the numbers involved in this trade - as many millions as were transported to the Americas - and explores the differences between the traffic in the East and the West. Beginning some eight centuries earlier than the Atlantic Trade, the Islamic Trade was conducted on a different scale, and provided slaves more often for domestic - including sexual - and military service than for plantation labour. Some slaves rose to positions of authority, and a few even became rulers. Because of specific spiritual teachings, Islam was generally more humane than the West in its treatment of slaves and in its willingness to grant them their freedom, although the processes of captivity and transport victimized untold numbers of innocent people, as did the creation of eunuchs for the Islamic market.

I'm in the middle of reading this book, starting a while ago, it requires intense concentration, so i tend to read put it down, read put it down. For me it has been a real eye opener, to know that slavery existed amongst black people, within an Islamic context, i had no idea this part of history existed. The use of religon here is hardly surprising. As the Trans- Atlantic slave trade within Europe thrived under thepretext of Christianity.

both religions (Chrisitianity and Islam) equally contributed to Africas downfall and the mysery of its people. And they are both still fighting for souls within the Continent.I will be reading this book shortly.

Slavery has existed in africa for as long as back as egypt at least. So it ain't new, I find the creation eunechs a bit interesting due to the facts that neither christians nor muslims are allowed to castrate men. It seems defiance has chosen it's ugly face

So it was black arabs enslaving Africans rather than paleskinned arabs enslaving black arabs? I know the moors brought it to europe, probably gave the europeans the idea in the first place.

Find it tough to read those books, kinda get the point and leave it at that.
