Although this is actually for a university project, I am quite interesting to see what other black people think about the film Bullet Boy which has been in British cinemas now for the last 4 weeks.

Personally I can say that I was not too impressed with the film. Even though I do believe the film was trying to show black community in a sympathetic light, the poor qaulity of the script meant that a lot of the scene did not follow natuarlly into each other which badly affected the continutiy overall and made the action difficult to watch. Also disappointing was the characters of the film, the under developed characters made is quite impossible for audiences to feel sorry for them, caring very little whether they either lived or died. All of these flaws I feel failed the film in its attempted to make an important impact.

For those who have some knowledge of the environment the film presents the film will not have that much impact or affect them in any way. At the end of the day you know whats what and I guess that the end of things really. But what bothers me, is that people who have not knowledge or understanding of the situation and struggle of young black men presented in the film.

Instaed of possibly addressing a situation of struggle and negative circumstance I fear that the film will again be misinterpretated by people who don't understand the situstion- in other word that film just reinforces the negative stereotypes that people already have about black people in Britain, being that all we want to do is run around thinking we are it, and killing each other off.

This of course is only my opinion and is not set in stone. I would love to know what other black people think about this film. Maybe I'm the one reading it in the wrong way and it actually does show something positive about us. I would love to hear from people with there thoughts.

I also watched Bullet Boy and I was both impressed and disturbed. Impressed because I was hoping that the film did not seek to glamorise gun violence and it did not. I was disturbed because of the poor quality of the script and the piss poor characters who for the most part had no real redeeming qualities, and so you are right when you say that it is hard to empathise with them. I was disappointed that a white newcomer director had charge of a script that sought to delve into the dark realms of the black community. Having a 'black girlfriend or black mates' does not qualify him for a film of this stature. This was a film that was not really directed at the general populace but the black community and a white core interested in the 'black experience'. Unfortunately, the director has not quite worked out that being Black is not synonymous with being a criminal. Bullet Boy? Forget it.
