Friday 30th September Africa Friday Late The V&A’s Africa 05 events launches with Africa Friday Late - an evening themed around the contemporaryculture ofAfrica. The highlight for this spectacular Africa evening will be a ‘Fashion in Motion’ event. There will also be an African bar , DJ and food. Dilomprizulike, the V&A’s artist-in-residence will present a live performance responding to the V&A’s textile collection, while a spoken word poetry performance with audience debate with be hosted by Beyonder and Tuggstar.





Friday Late The weekend starts here... chill out with the original contemporary late night event held on the last Friday of the month - featuring live performances, guest DJ's and late bar.
ADMISSION is FREE to the museum although some events may be ticketed.

Dilomprizulike, V&A Artist in Residence (click image for larger version)
Dilomprizulike The self-styled 'Junkman from Africa' and V&A artist in residence creates a performance called 'How the tailor died' responding to the Museum's textile collection .
DJ Dudu Sarr The DJ, whose projects include Momo's Afrotronic night and best-selling compilation album Ah-Frek-lya, performs.
DJ Zak Akhimien Founder of the Shakara/Amplified collectives, plays his approach to African music incorporating Latin, Funk and House.
Beyonder and Tuggstar A spoken word poetry performance with audience debate.
Kaago from Ivory Coast A spectacular West African troupe of dancers, drummers, singers and musicians perform Plus African bar and food.
Evening supported by the Gulbenkian Foundation







Saturday 1st October Africa Fashion Day Come along dressed in African inspired outfits and celebrate African style and fashion in a day full of brilliant events and activities for all the family.
You can take to our catwalk and model your outfit after spending some time with our choreographer; bring along your favourite object for a Samuel Fosso inspired portrait, listen to stories from Ethiopia and much more.

Re-cycled Fashion Workshop Lunchroom

The V&A’s Africa 05 artist-in-residence Dilomprizulike leads this art and fashion based workshop. Create amazing wearable art for a fashion presentation later in the day. This event is open to all ages.

Drawing inspiration from the work of Cameroonian photographer Samuel Fosso and Seyou Keita from Mali, Anita Mackenzie invites you to dress up and bring your favourite object along to a photographic session.

A similar session will also take place in Morley College in Waterloo during November.
If you take part in this event your photograph could be featured in a forthcoming exhibition called Autoportraits: The Many Sides and Things of Me due open in February 2006 at the college.

For West Africans in London cloth is big business in every sense. Addy Trude examines the ‘aesthetics of bigness’, the design and construction of made-to –measure garments in a Ghanaian workshop in north London and considers how factory-made textiles, like wax prints and lace travel the world.
Africa Fashion Presentation 16.00 – 17.30
Join students from ‘A’ Team Arts as they showcase their African inspired collection. Traditional bridal wear based on the work of women from the Ghanaian Cultural Community Group, the Al-Hasaniya Moroccan Women’s Centre, the African Women Solidarity Organisation and Somali Arts Project will be displayed. Work produced as part of the Re-cycled Fashion workshop earlier in the day will also be shown.
Join choreographer Dorna Casteallo to go through a routine from 13.00 in the Raphael Gallery and then join in and show off your own outfits.
Sunday 2nd October Drawing Together: Big Draw Meets Carnival Carnival at the V&A
(Big Draw National Launch across South Kensington)
11.00 – 17.00, various locations
The V&A celebrates Drawing and Carnival with an extravaganza of events. Draw a design for a carnival costume, help make a costume, even try one on. There are mask making workshops, face painting and steel bands to listen to. You can find out more about carnival and how important drawing is for recording ideas for carnival costumes. At 3.30 over a hundred carnival performers will process along Exhibition Road and you can take part. So come and get drawn in to Carnival!
Saturday 8th October African Bazaar Garden
11.00 – 17.00
For one day only the V&A garden will be transformed into a spectacular African Bazaar. Artists inspired by Africa will showcase their original work from fashion to home furnishings.
The area will be buzzing with music and activity including a Fair-trade shop with delicious goodies from across the continent, a Marrakech tea room, and Dakar DJ music bar. Take part in activities including face-painting, having your photograph taken in an African style studio, and playing traditional West African board games.

Wednesay 12 October Africa Though a Lens Prints & Drawing Study Room
18.30 – 19.30
Assistant curator Anne-Marie Eze gives an overview of photographs of Africa and Africans in the V&A’s collections. She charts the changes in representation of the continent and it’s people from ethnological photographs of the 19th Century to works by contemporary African photographers.
This informal talk takes place in the recently refurbished Prints and Drawing Study Room and includes an opportunity for you to view the actual prints.
Textile Printing and Decoration Workshop Seminar Room 3
14.00 – 16.30
Design and decorate your own textile inspired by African designs. Try out printing, embroidery and appliqué to create a unique cloth for use as a hanging or cushion cover. With textile artist Ruth Singer.
This workshop is particularly suitable for people aged 50+.
Thursday 13th October African Thread Seminar Room 3
14.00 – 16.00
This workshop uses artefacts and textiles from the V&A's collection to explore a brief history of Africa and it's cultures. With Maureen Mckarkiel.
This workshop is particularly suitable for mental health services users.

Saturday 22nd October Africa Music Day Raphael Gallery
11.00 – 17.00
Join us to celebrate and explore the culture and tradition of African music. Leading musicians will guide you through the diversity of the continent’s musically heritage with performances and workshops. Join in with percussion, chanting and rhythm and explore a range of traditional instruments.
This day is produced in collaboration with the Africa-Europe Forum.
Juwon Ogungbe (Nigeria) - Performance and Workshop Hassan Eraji
11.00
Join Juwon Ogungbe for this West African music performance and family oriented workshop. He will perform an excerpt from his musical theatre piece Oshe - 'A Friend in Need', based on one of the Yoruba tortoise folk tales.
As part of the workshop you can learn West African songs and accompany yourself using percussion instruments.

Ezra Ethiopian Dance Group (Ethiopia) - Performance 13.30
Ethiopian dance group Ezra takes to the floor in a celebration of East African rhythm. The main focus of their work is music and dance for development, working with and for the most disadvantaged people of their country, but they are also performers and choreographers of international standard
Hassan Erraji (Morocco) - Performance 14.30
A master musician and singer-songwriter who is also a very good storyteller, Hassan will be performing with his main stage instrument the ud - the forerunner of the classical lute and modern guitar. Having no frets gives the ud the possibility of providing all intervals, particularly the inherent quarter tones and the modes which constitutes the soul of Arabic and North African music.

Doreen Thobekile - Performance and Workshop 15.45
Doreen Thobekile is a South African Kwazulu roots diva of immaculate pedigree with a phenomenal voice. She is also skilled player of various Southern African instruments such as the mbira and umqangala. Come along to her performance and then take part in her workshop exploring South African music including Zulu singing and Vocal chanting.
