a Tribute
by Sandra Y. GOVAN
Professor of English

For a very long time, Ms. Butler was the only and the pre-eminent
AFRIKAN Woman science fiction writer in the world.
Her books from the brilliant OWild Seed¹ to the most recent and equally
brilliant OParable of the Talents¹ - explored such topics
as class, race, intolerance, environmentalism, war, and spirituality to
name but a few in such a manner as to invoke evocative
thought and to raise the capacity of the science fiction genre to new
levels.
In memory of her gifts and of her Legacy, there will be a series of tributes
and fundraisers sponsored by THE CARL BRANDON SOCIETY
Beginning on 28 February 2007, continuing on through 4 March 2007, and
beyond.
These events, some of which will be held in the San Francisco East Bay
area, are being given to benefit the Octavia E. Butler Memorial
Scholarship Fund.
The goal is for a fully endowed scholarship fund of $100,000.00, which
* O...will enable writers of color to attend one of the Clarion writing
workshops where Octavia got her start. It is meant to cement
Octavia¹s legacy by providing the same experience / opportunity that Octavia
had to future generations of new writers of color.¹
The first Octavia E. Butler Memorial Scholarship will be awarded in 2007.
Details of the application process will be announced later this year.
Forward,
m

attend one of the Clarion writing workshops, where Octavia got her start. It
is meant to cement Octavia's legacy by providing the same
experience/opportunity that Octavia had to future generations of new writers
of color. In addition to her stint as a student at the original Clarion
Writers Workshop in Pennsylvania in 1970, Octavia taught several times for
Clarion West in Seattle, Washington, and Clarion in East Lansing, Michigan,
giving generously of her time to a cause she believed in.
