THEY TAKE MY KINDNESS FOR . . . . . . . .WEAKNESS.
THEY TAKE MY SILENCE FOR . . . . . . . . SPEECHLESS.
THEY CONSIDER MY UNIQUENESS . . . . . . .STRANGE.
THEY CALL MY LANGUAGE . . . . . . . . . .SLANG.
THEY SEE MY CONFIDENCE AS . . . . . . . . CONCEIT.
THEY SEE MY MISTAKE AS . . . . . . . . . DEFEAT.
THEY CONSIDER MY SUCCESS . . . . . . . . ACCIDENTAL.
THEY MINIMIZE MY INTELLIGENCE TO . . . . POTENTIAL.
MY QUESTIONS MEAN I AM UNAWARE.
MY ADVANCEMENT IS SOMEHOW UNFAIR.
TO VOICE CONCERN IS DISCONTENTMENT.
IF I STAND UP FOR MYSELF, I AM TOO DEFENSIVE.
IF I DON'T TRUST THEM, I AM TOO APPREHENSIVE.
I AM DEFIANT IF I SEPARATE.
I AM FAKE IF I ASSIMILATE.
MY CHARACTER IS CONSTANTLY UNDER ATTACK.
PRIDE FOR MY RACE MAKES ME "TOO BLACK."

No, I am not very talented when it comes to poetry, nor do know who the real author is. The person was simply aPittsburgh local. It was from a sessionaudio recorded in a jazz & poetry lounge one night in Pittsburgh some years back. I happened to listen to it again, so I decided to share.

I don't know....I don't watch much television. There's too much poison. Maybe the TV sitcom was reciting some poet...I doubt a sitcom writer would write a poem like this.

Well in the show Mohesha was a writer. But the poem wasn't read by her. She attended a poet's 'club' and another actress/poet read it.The poetwas dressed in African gear and she read a militant poem, (very similar tothe one you typed). In fact it inspired me to write my own lol.
Ican't rememberall the words becausethe showaired a long time ago.

This is an excellent poem! More young African Americans need to here something like this. There isso much black hatred going on that many blacks need to find unity within.Poems like these are the ones that should have more recongnition. Thank you. For posting thispoem.
