African Booty Scratcher

This is a movie that will speak to the hearts of all those teenagers who are first generation Americans that are having to deal with being the child of immigrant African parents. The film tells the story of a teenager who is trying to fit into her school, and balance the demands that her parents place on her to be a ‘decent’ African child.

She is placed on the crossroads when it is time to go to prom. Her mother wants her to go in traditional dress, and she wants to wear something that will allow her to fit in. What does she decide to do? You will have to watch the movie to find out. Overall, the movie captures the feelings of a teenage girl stuck between two cultures. It was screened at the American Black Film Festival, got an honorable mention at Fort Lauderdale International Film Festival, an honorable mention at the Director’s Guild of America, screened at the Pan African Film Festival, and was acquired by HBO to air during Black History Month. Not too shabby!

Nikyatu Jusu is a gifted movie director who was 17 when she made the film in 2007. To learn more about her, visit her website.NIKYATU • FILMMAKER
