Mj and the white media -
01-07-09, 12:08 AM
LadyDay alluded to this somehwhat,in another thread.......
I am becoming increasingly incensed at a theme/narrative I've seen developing over the last few days, in both the mainstream media, and among some white people in general. The theme/narrative is: African-Americans are embracing Michael Jackson in death, after turning their backs on him in life, or why are African Americans embracing/claiming Michael Jackson when he was trying to be white? What's with that? Are they trying to Jimi Hendrix Mike? remove him from the Black tradition he came out of? Probably. To Michael's credit, unlike Hendrix,he always gave credit to/shined the light on James Brown/Jackie Wilson etc, and the tradition that produced/informed him. So it will be difficult to do. Plus, we're not having it.........
First of all, as you all should already know, cause I've said it before on other topics, I'm always annoyed when white people stick their noses in Black folks business. I'm not talking about white people who respectfully add their input on topics that pertain to AA's but know the limits/boundaries. I'm talking about the disrespectful, condescending, nosy a**, sh*t stirring, author of chaos, discord, confusion, I don't really give a damn about MJ or Black people, I just like to see ya'll at each other's throat, way it USUALLY manifests.
Second of all, the assertion is a flat out lie. Black folks supported the WHOLE Jackson family for YEARS, long before Thriller. Through the J-5 years, through Dancing Machine, Enjoy Yourself, Destiny,Heartbreak Hotel, Jermaine's first solo album, My Name is Jemaine,(my aunt had that, lol). After Thriller, Black radio STAYED playing MJ's music when mainstream, read white radio media had long before written Jackson off as a joke and worse. Plenty of regular Black folks bought Dangerous, Invincible, History, etc. Black rappers continued to mention MJ positively in their songs, work with him, as did the most current Black producers.
When Michael showed up at Black award shows he was ALWAYS received with love, and usually PANDEMONIUM, like when he unexpectedly showed up at the BET Awards when Mr. James Brown was being honored, a couple of years ago.
Even AFTER the sexual abuse allegations, most of us supported him, and many of us defended him, and refused to believe them.
No matter how pale or weird he was looking, we always treated him like the Michael we knew and loved. Just because someone has started to act in a way that take issue with, or you just can't mess with them in the same way you once did, or you don't cosign their behavior, doesn't mean you've turned your back on them or don't love them. If anything, the case can be made that Michael TRIED to distance himself from Black folks at certain points in time (and came back when it was expedient),of course it didn't work,it never does.......
That's why I was angry at MJ for a point in time, because to me he was putting himself in a position where his accomplishments/brilliance/legacy were going to dimished or flat out taken from him, and it's always smart to dance with the one that brung ya, as the old saying goes.
I don't feel that this recurring theme narrative is coincidental, and that's why I'm glad Sharpton jumped out the box ,ready, by making his initial statements at the Apollo when Michael passed. Sharpton already knew what was coming. That's why I dig him.

This situation takes me back to when my own father died....because like MJ he had the opportunity if he saw fit to PUT the record straight to make that connection... The fact is he never did and because of his lack of in action those with a vested interest are able to fill the viod with their own narrative...
I agree with you that Black did support MJ, especially in the early years..however i also believe it is true that an element of blacks did reject MJ....and imo for good reason..it wasn't enough that he made himself look arifically WHITE, or worse that he took up time after time with THE most dyam arse bluefoot... For me he took the biscuit with the children..not only by insulting our collective intelligence by claiming they were his biologically.. but also flaunting them ...
So i'm not going to front and say because the man is dead that, his behaviour was no an insult to us and our culture, and i'm not going to lie and say i lost all respect for him 1st after BLACK or WHITE, and then the other bullshit stuff he did..
I accept that the man in all probablity had at best a personality disorder or as I suspect a full blown mental health issue .. but that said its not entirely true that BLack did reject him out of hand... But what is also not true is for these people to claim he was 'loved' or embraced by whites.. They were laughing at him, and they absolutely took the piss out of him at every corner without mercy..

I think how Micheal Jackson's story is told depends on who is doing the telling.
And it's up to us I think, to tell, not have it dictated to us,according to their(white media's) agenda.

His behavior certainly was an insult to us and our culture, but most of us understood that he had issues and felt a sense of empathy and protectiveness, at the same time we were disappointed/angry/disgusted with him. Those feelings are not mutually exclusive. People often feel that way about family or people they've had longstanding relationships with. The AA community in general NEVER turned their back on him.The proof is in the pudding. He knew he could show up at any Black awards show be shown respect and love(was never once booed or ridiculed like at non Black events), he knew he could call Ebony, Jet,Essence or any other Black magazine and get a receptive audience. That NEVER changed, even when he was walking around looking like Ichabod Crane. When he was accused of the sex allegations, even more of us went into protect/defend him mode. Taking issue with someone's behavior or lifestyle and telling them so, does not equate turning your back on them.
White folks generally, view it that way because their support for him never ran deep, it was always shallow and conditional, anyway. Ours never was. That makes all the difference in the world(that' why you need to dance with the one that brung ya, as they say in the South). We viewed him and his fam like family, more than entertainers. You can beef with fam all day, it's still fam, and when some ish jumps off, you're gonna have their back. You might not Like them or their ways at times, but you still Love them.

One of them said: "The very first time he had sex with me he said: 'The King of Pop's going to lick your lollipop'. I still laugh thinking about that."
The book says Jackson was "madly in love” with one man, who he is alleged to have met at a seedy motel.
Halperin said: "Virtually everybody has told me. Even those who are his most ardent defenders, people who maintain he is innocent of the molestation charges, insist that he is homosexually inclined."
He said the two lovers were an aspiring actor known as "Lawrence" and a Hollywood waiter.
The actor said he and Jackson met nearly every night for three weeks at his home in the Hollywood Hills in a short affair.
Lawrence said: "He was very shy. But when he started to have sex, he was insatiable."
The book said Jackson went to a motel for gay sex in 2007 when he moved to Las Vegas. It said he fell in love with man in his 20s.
Halperin said: "He rarely left his residence, but when he did, according to one of Jackson's closest confidants, it was to meet a boyfriend at a run-down motel."
The book quotes a source as saying: "He met a construction worker and fell madly in love with him.
"Michael would leave the house in disguise, often dressed as a woman, and would go to meet his boyfriend at a motel that was one of Vegas' grungiest dives.
"Michael was broke. He struggled to put food on the table for his children. It was all he could afford then."
