I have a problem with this particular programme.

I don't want to say just yet, I'd rather get other people's opinions first to see whether anyone who also watches this programme has noticed what I've noticed.

Hope i am not wrong with my case but is it their storylines with all the IR couples??

Well, this has been holby city's thing since it started....first it was like ALL the black men in the UK only went after midle aged white women....now its withMOSTLY black women characters with their whites, Asians etc men.....and that prety nurse going after Zubinthat had me in stiches.......

PH, Is this what you were thinking about? Or is it their portrayal of Ghana.......it was so predictable it....sigh

It's interesting how many of these programme makers very carefully project subliminalcodes and innuendos in their scripts.

I've been watched it for many months now and I've yet to see any truly positive representation of the black family. It's so damn obvious that Holby City tries it's best to shy away from portraying African relationships in a positive way.

There was one episode a little while back where they had one of the women from 3 non blondes playing some kind of a glamour model (that was made to look very pretty)who was pregnant. Her man was a hip hop DJ, but was he a brotha? No! Some skinny arsed white boy who took pride in the child when it was finally born and promised to do his utmost to look after his family in one of the most overly sentimental cheesy moments.

The following week they had a black woman who's sick daughter was being rushed to hospital, and while the father was trying to protect his child's welfare, we get treated to an entirely stereotypical moment were he was being cussed out by the mother (who was made to look like the straight-out-of-a-council-estate downtrodden sista) for not being there for his family and only choosing to show up now and reh reh reh. Then subsequently the child died and when he (the father) was grieving it was made to look as if he had a nerve even shedding a tear.

As regard to the sellout character Jess....she was currently dating one of the blackmale doctors who went out his way to treat her like a queen, but does she appreciate him? No. Against her dad's wishes, she runs back to Mr Asian man Zubin who more or less treated her like shit throughout their time together while forgetting about the brotha wholoved her and was willing to take her AND Zubin's child in. Meanwhile Jess's dad is in Ghana visiting his dysfunctional African family while kissing up somebluefoot nurse'slips right in the heart of the African continent!!!

Even today's episode showed some eediat black man trying so hard to have a relationship with some bluefoot who was constantly shrugging him off and not even showing the least bit of interest.

I'm probably going to stop watching this load of shite because it's dead obvious that the 'African relationshipsnever work and inevitably result in failure' message is subtley being put across to people's minds.

I got bored with this program yonks ago....cause the person you see in the opening scene....happily going about painting the ceiling/welding the petrol tank/cooking chips/driving the juggernaut............always ends up ...getting hurt......surprise surprise.

It is s drama....to entertain...as Craig would say "End of"

You know what puzzles me most is people go on about how the media affects us and influences quite a lot of whatour youths believes in.....yet in the same breath when talking of media *elements* like films, television, radio etc this elements suddenly becomes just *entertainment*........thats just naive....the fact of the matter is, what we SEE day in day out has an impact on how we think.......thats is why we fight to have a positive image of us in the media....from the characters in soaps to the rappers who are going around behaving like loaded up hooligans.......we realise the damage of how these portrayal can have on our people.

So Holby City's portrayal of us is not just entertainment.......it is there to have an impact on some us whether we acknowledge it or not........i made this point in the Will Smith Thread.....nothing concerning us in the western media is never only about just entertainment........otherwise that idiot Chairman for racial equality Phillips wouldn't be going aroundcalling BB house mates as a reflection of what weAfricans are like in real life....

It matters because i have to say I've noticed what appears to be a deliberate and consistent ploy to ONLY show black people in interracial relationship.. rarely do I see black on black relationships portrayed in positive terms, in fact you'd be lucky to see it full stop..

I also think of 55 degrees north where its just balant....numerous adverts where this is the case, I watch trouble and some of the so called BLACK American comedies are obviously on an agenda to promote interracial dating as the BENCHMARK...

Like i said I numerous times I have no problem with people making life choices about who their partner should be.. However I object to have this agenda rammed down my throat and I resent having it portrayed that loving someone of my own race is somehow not 'fashionable'..

I don't buy into the beige utopia agenda that is obviously being pushed my some small minority on both sides, because that is NOT for me how racial 'harmoney' will be addressed... so I personally really wish that these liberals will just wake up and stop bullshitting themselve or us with their wishy washy ideas..

I am not a soap lover because I feel all the people on them are allmessed up "Thats Entertainment"BUT I would say that in my opinion Holby is better than the rest.

You have 5 Black people on Holby.

All are differnt people ................. All have issues ........ Thats what you get in a soap.

The Africa story well was predictable & corny in parts BUT I must say I enjoyed it.

The people in Holby are better than any of the black people I have seen in any other soap.

I see,as they say, where you are coming from.
But do you believe there is an agenda by some authority to use only mixed race couples? or to show all blacks to be of bad stereotypes?
The comments about black characters could also be repeated by the white audience about the majority of white characters....as if Maxwell and Craig are representative of my own lifestyle....or what I aspire to....yea sure!!l
They dont have anything to do with me at all,but I dont feel the need to apologies for their behaviour,or complain that they are poorly represent me or any other person of a pale complexion.

I don't doubt that the black characters on the show are intelligent people. But to be honest, I could care less if they had the ability to stand on one foot, blindfolded, pat their heads and rub their tummies while reciting the ninth edition of the Chambers dictionary backwards....ifblack couples/familiesaren't being represented I don't give a toss about all of that.

As Kunjufu pointed out, we're the only people who literally 99% of the time are shown paired off with whites. TV doesn't represent our reality in any way whatsoever. I can walk through almost any area in London, Birmingham, Manchester, Wolverhampton and walk past many black families and/or couples in love. Until that gets represented nothing else matters to me.

Let say they have a black couple/family on a soap.

Now because its a soap there are going to be issues & what ever way they show

them people are just not going to be happy.

The last time I saw a BLACK family on Eastenders I cringed everytime they were on.

Its probably best they dont portray a black couple because they just have no idea.

Why show mixed couples / Familys ?

Well because UNFORTUNALTY its becoming more of the norm.

Because the writers of these shows are mainly white they can relate to at least one half of the family.
