The movie was made in hollywood. Obviously they set it in their own back yard, or places easy for them to recognize. I don't have a problem with it. I can't see an american industry making movies set in Kinshasa or Nairobi to be honest or even why they should furthermore.
It's like watching 24. Every terrorist threat to the USA apparently threatens LA first and foremost lol Jack Bauer never visits NY or Washington which one would expect terrorists in the real world to be far more concerned about than LA but TV and movie studios live in hollywood so that's what they're worried about.
This movie looks like a cross between independence day, castaway, and perhaps alien. I think it will be alright. Will does best in these type of things.

If the film sticks to the book, it should be very good.Not to give too much away, if done correctly this could seta new standard in sci-fi/horror.
