Teenage Gangs of South London (Fast Link) -
06-07-07, 04:54 AM
The award-winning documentary series turns its focus closer to home for this one-off special, as Ross Kemp uncovers the stark reality of gang violence on the streets of the capital.
February 2007 was marred by a spate of fatal shootings in south London. In one two-week period, three boys, aged between 15 and 16, were gunned down in gang-related murders.
These tragic deaths have served to highlight growing concerns for the increased gun culture among youth gangs in the capital. The Metropolitan Police have identified as many as 169 gangs in London, a quarter of which have been involved in murder, and with the attraction of gang camaraderie, power and the 'bling' lifestyle, the situation appears to be getting worse.
Kemp gains unprecedented access to Brixton's notorious Murder Zone gang, who provide an alarming insight into a world of drugs, violence and guns. Ross also meets Frank, former member of The Peckham Boys, one of London's most feared gangs, who blames the recent murders on a lack of gang hierarchy and a lack of respect.
Kemp also examines the other side of the coin by talking to the families torn apart by gang violence, local police and an ex-gang member on a mission to get boys out of the gangs.
This sobering documentary takes over from where the news crews stop, going deeper into the lives of the gang members and those living in the midst of gang violence on London's streets.
