Default The Education Of Sonny Carson - 06-12-07, 08:15 PM

This movie looks good I'm gonna buy it. Has anyone seen this film before? It's an old 'hood' movie from back in the early 70s that was heavily sampled on Ghostface's Ironman album. Funny enough when I first heard the "there's only one and that's me" sample years ago I thought it was a boxer talking smack before a fight lol.

I don't how I never heard of this movie until recently because judging from the clips alone I can tell it's a classic.

For real. I ordered my copy already but it's only available in the states so I'm hoping I'll receive it before the holidays.

I heard Sonny Carson tried to sue Ghostface for sampling the movie on his album.

Rest In Peace to Sonny Carson. and Professor X.

I don't know about the results of the lawsuit....I didn't know Carson sued him.

This film is heavy like I knew it would be!! The dialogue is realistic as hell, the way those dudes talk is different from what I've observed in others 70s flicks - not sure how to put it, but they sound really 'recent'. Maybe the authenticity is due to the majority of folks in this film being real hoods and not professional actors -except for Syrus from The Warriors and a few other cats.

It was definitely one of the best 70s flicks I've seen but nobody I know has heard of it.

However I wish it showed the kind of life Sonny led AFTER he was released from prison. The ending was powerful when they juxtaposed scenes of the earlier parade and him standing on the same street lonely and realising everything was gone, but it just felt somewhat vague, although that's only a minor thing IMO.

I'd definitely recommend it!

Bump.

I read an interview with Fab 5 Freddy and he said back in the 70s he knew the dude who played the leader of the Hawks in real life - that guy was pretty much playing himself in the movie. Apparently the group MOP are descendants of the Tomahawks.

The Tomahawks

BTW who sung the tune playing in the above link? I think Canibus sampled it in one of his freestyles.
