I was thinking of putting this in the news & politics village, but I don't wanna limit it to just those areas.

I'm a big fan of documentaries, although I haven't seen to many, so I thought I'd start this thread where people can post what documentaries you've seen lately and what you thought of em.

2 docs I've seen lately are "Our Story, Our Voice" and "Darwin's Nightmare". Anyone seen these?

Our story our voice mainly attacks the issue of how the media is controlled by certain people to satisfy their own agendas and how the voices of everyday people are never hear. It touches on many topics: from globalisation, to the 'war on terror', the crimes of the USA to racism. I'd definately recommend this to anyone here as these topics are very relevant today and I think there's something to be learnt here. The documentaries made by this company are particularly good at giving different perspectves (particularly African perspectives) on a topic. This dvd is independent, so it might cost you a bit, but if you don't wanna buy, it borrow it (or 500 years later) from someone. Go on their website and check the trailers for their other docs (or find em on youtube). They're releasing one in 2009 called 'Motherland' - should be good.

To be honest, when I was watching this, I felt it was interesting, but not very exciting. However, I recommend this so much. This was a really moving film and it's left a strong imprint on my mind. The desperation that these people are living in is very saddening and the economic situation of a town where a large amount of money is made by exporting fish but where the people are starving is depressing. One of the best things about the film is that, even though it focuses on a town in Tanzania, it basicly presents a picture of what is going on in several parts of Africa - exploitation by outsiders, leadig to the extreme poverty, death and detruction that has torn through Africa.

i saw the doco a few years ago...thought it was imformative but depressing...essentially this is the pace of progress, there was a documentary a while back that looked at chinas yangtzsee ( not sure about correct spelling) river dolphin. the dolphins been wiped out now, gone the way of the dodo. all over the world species are being wiped out and have been wiped out because of mans relentless drive to populate or to feed itself ...problem is many african states only have one or two sources of income/food sources and when they are gone , thats it..

another good doco to see is the battle of haditha ...
