Default Trojans etc - 26-12-08, 11:00 AM

My laptop keeps getting inundated with trojans
one in particula called vundon (sp)
at one time my laptop would just switch off and stay off
my firewall was being switched off and so was automatic updates
that bugger had replicated itself everywhere.

i downloaded adaware
then malware bytes cleaned it right up but the buggers keep coming back

i was told to just use the windows firewall, but now i think i should go back to zone alarms free fire wall.

what do you think and how will i know if the system is clean clean clean

That vundon is a bitch to remove. Your better off saving your files to a separte or external hard drive and wiping your hard disk clean and reformatting it again from scratch.

Or there are a few sites that tell you the process (if you google) which usually mean s downloading about 7 diffrent adware/spywrae/virus remover and running them all in a specified sequence. Easier to wipe clean and start again.

I use Comodo firewall with Avast anti virus, and use CCleaner and RegscrubXP periodically.

And here is a free removal tool for vundo

I believe the rule is never to go on line without some sort of protection, and to keep it updated.
Here is a link to some very good advice......if it works.....hope it helps

thank you

should i use the removal tool even if it does not come up on my usual scans from adaware and malware bytes any more?

do you think i should change to zone alarms free firewall or anything other than windows?

Im no expert to be honest.
Using the removal tool wouldn't hurt, even if its not showing....I would guess.

My best advice is to join the forum in my link and ask there, they are a friendly and helpful bunch, and they have a beginners forum.

(Hope this doesn't contravene this forums policy of linking to other sites)

Wiping th e drive clean dosen't always work... have done it three times on my computers here in the caffe and the virus is still there. That AVG program is good, so is Avast. Zomealarm is overly complicated.... make sure you don't have too many firewalls flaring up either, they bounce off of one another.

ok i will check out the forum. i ran the tool and it said it removed it. so i will see.
i am sure when zone alarms was used i didnt get these issues. avg flashes up to say trojan detected on open etc etc . but so far seems ok now . but i guess i really need something more robust than windows firewall

thanks for all the input

Agree with this - the Internet is an inherently unsafe environment from a computer security point of view. Any level of browsing needs protection, and unfortunately some of the most entertaining sites can also be the unhealthiest.

@LD - Might be worth looking at how you connect to the Web - would say you definitely need more than Windows Firewall, especially if you are not connecting through a router on a home network (say through WiFi when you're out and about) - another software-based firewall like ZoneAlarm is a must.

If you are connecting through a router at home and are still being bombarded with trojans, you might want to check the modem/router's security settings. If you have a decent router you should not need the likes of ZoneAlarm unless you upload and download a lot of risky stuff (another potential source of infection). Can be tricky to configure the two to work together.

Using a browser other than Internet Explorer (almost any alternative will do) also helps. By all accounts IE is getting better, but to me it hardly seems worth the potential aggro given that so much malicious stuff on the Web is aimed at exploiting vulnerabilities in Microsoft's products.

Also gotta vote for AVG - the free version is pretty good, but it's worth paying for one of the upgrades - they have a suite which has pretty much everything you need - anti-virus/anti-spyware/email scanning and a link scanner (which doesn't work well with Firefox) so you get a bit more protection whilst surfing. Been using it for years and never had a major problem with infection. Used to use ZoneAlarm till I got a new wireless router which includes a firewall, at which point ZA started getting in the way so I got rid of it.

I think there are two sites that I go to that a pop up comes up. one is a blog that is heavily covered inadverts. then there is myspace. i have banned everyone from using myspace on my laptop for now and me so i cannot check my own myspace but that is ok. myspace is a drag nowadays too much html graphics and scripts.

since running the removal tool and the other stuff my laptop has sped up a bit.

Ladyday.

After reading what has happened to you I would suggest making a back up of all your stuff that is important to you including keeping copies of the programs suggested above.

Secondly I would seriously consider formatting your hard drive. Its the only sure fire way of getting rid of all the trojans on your pc. I know that this can be a bit of a pain, but in the long run its the best option in my opinion.
