Agree with this - the Internet is an inherently unsafe environment from a computer security point of view. Any level of browsing needs protection, and unfortunately some of the most entertaining sites can also be the unhealthiest.
@LD - Might be worth looking at how you connect to the Web - would say you definitely need more than Windows Firewall, especially if you are not connecting through a router on a home network (say through WiFi when you're out and about) - another software-based firewall like ZoneAlarm is a must.
If you are connecting through a router at home and are still being bombarded with trojans, you might want to check the modem/router's security settings. If you have a decent router you should not need the likes of ZoneAlarm unless you upload and download a lot of risky stuff (another potential source of infection). Can be tricky to configure the two to work together.
Using a browser other than Internet Explorer (almost any alternative will do) also helps. By all accounts IE is getting better, but to me it hardly seems worth the potential aggro given that so much malicious stuff on the Web is aimed at exploiting vulnerabilities in Microsoft's products.
Also gotta vote for AVG - the free version is pretty good, but it's worth paying for one of the upgrades - they have a suite which has pretty much everything you need - anti-virus/anti-spyware/email scanning and a link scanner (which doesn't work well with Firefox) so you get a bit more protection whilst surfing. Been using it for years and never had a major problem with infection. Used to use ZoneAlarm till I got a new wireless router which includes a firewall, at which point ZA started getting in the way so I got rid of it.
