What Tech do you own? - 05-03-10, 01:13 PM

What have you got and what does it do?

Looking around for a new MP3 player although I don't need one and realised just how many gadgets I have, as most of them do the same thing its pretty ridiculous but thats not the point here.

So far I have;

Google G1 Phone
Cowon I Audio 30Gig HHD MP3
Zen 8Gig MP3 Player
MDA Vario in a drawer someplace

Ok... that dosen't sound like a lot but its not including other bits and peices, sound system and so on.

Right now I'm mulling over whether to get me an IPod Touch or the latest Cowon S9 and its a tough call, was in HMV last week, messed around with an IPod that was on display with a set of WeSC headphones and was impressed by it, very useable and snappy fun to use but as far as sound quality goes the Cowon beats it hands down... still, am actually considering putting style over quality and ending up with another wifi net browser.

Anyway... rep your tech.

Peace
ABO

... what happened to that super computer you were building?

Guess a lot of techies are actually quite "low" tech, probably the convinience factor most technology hails itself in as being for, the driving mindset behind the idea of technology, rather than truck loads of sameo a techie looks for what does the job simply as per the definition of technology... same kind of analogy a music loving friend of mine gave for people who appreciate food, basically that fat people, although they eat a lot, like food but don't appreciate it, fact is if they did and were more refined, realised that most chocolaite bars aren't made from cocoa for example they would probably loose weight eating acutal food stuffs in place of the stuff they tend toward... so to continue the analogy a techie, someone who appreciates technology may not own as much gear as others but instead have a culture of pride based on adage clunky but refined choices... like Koss headphones to an audiophile. Makes sence.

Still, figured it out... the MP3 dillemma, its all a matter of style over function, as MP3s are files, intangiable quality killers apple have realised that the display and styling of their products interface would take the place of album art and so on... the diffrence between the ipod touch and the cowon s9 ("apple eater") is that you want to look at the ipod as you use it, you want to flick about and stare at the screen rather than put it in your pocket... the sound is crap apparently, need a headphone amp, the cowons screen, resolution etc is amazing, sound is too but it lacks the jazz of an ipod as an all out entertainment machine.

Can't belive I'm selling out and considering one, bet it won't even convert recorded tracks. Nothing out there really compares, the new archos range isnt fit for travel and personal use, too big.

Wonder if the new ipad competes with them now...?

Oh yeah, I opted out on buying the super-computer, as I figured it just wasn't worth it considering the state of the operating systems. To get the performance I want, I would have to custom build a Linux kernel, and perhaps even drivers, and I just don't have time for that.

So I opted for a docking station to integrate with a laptop, that had a wireless keyboard & mouse. I then put an older 32'' LCD HDTV at my workstation to work as the monitor when my laptop is plugged into the docking station.

My laptop has the following specifications:
  • i7 820qm 1.73GHz 8M Cache Quad Core Processor
  • 8GB DDR RAM
  • 240M Nvidia Graphics Card
  • BluRay Burner/ROM
  • 802.11n
  • Fingerprint scanner
  • SATA connector
  • HDMI connector
  • VGA connector
  • USB port (x3)
  • Windows 7 Ultimate (64-bit)
  • 15.6'' display (1366 x 768)

To synchronize/centralize data, I just decided to get the CS407e NAS (RAID-5 configuration, 4 HDD bays) through a VPN router so I can access the data anywhere in the world I have an Internet connection.

Uhm...oh yeah, I also have a Nikon CoolPix w/ 7x Optical zoom. I wanted a pocket camera with 10x, but just couldn't find one at a reasonable price. People get riled up about the Mega Pixels of the camera, when the quality of the photo comes down to the lens. I have to say though, I used to use 2x - 4x optical zoom cameras, but were like 7MP and they don't even compare to my 7x Nikon CoolPix with comparable mega pixels.

Hmmm...think that's it. I only buy the technology that I need and use often. I don't even have a game console like Xbox 360, Nintendo Wii, or anything. However, I have been thinking about getting the Wii, as I do really like the golf.

Black Lion

I have a program called Magix audio cleaning lab. I used it ages ago to turn all my cassette taps and 12"s into MP3 files. Could have made CDs too if I'd wanted.

I understand that now you can buy a USB turntable which will do that by itself also.

You can choose the sample rate/bit rate from the MP3 compressed standard or higher without loses. Just know that it's a bigger file the less compression (obviously).

For myself I succumbed to the Apple monster ages ago and find my pod as essential as my bloody mobile fone. Hard to imagine life before it. It's kinda insidious that way lol

My is the ipod classic 120gb. The nano and touch are for people with small libraries or smaller files. My music library is VERY big and I have a lot of video on there too.

Oooh yeah quick tip for people buying personal audio, don't buy from inside the EU. Import from US if you can. The EU has limited personal stereos to protect peoples ears from high noise levels. It sounds nice in theory but in practice means if you walk down the street or get on a train you can't hear your music for the background. You'll be stuck and have to do like me and get expensive noise cancelling headphones (active) to get a sound.

Oh yeah and if you're importing electronics from the US have the seller mark it as a gift or HM revenues and custom arseholes will slap a tax sticked on it for you

Muttley DO something!!

Pretty simple kit-wise:

Samsung C6625 smartphone

Toshiba L45QD laptop (Athlon CPU, 6GB RAM, Windows 7)

Couple of self-assembled PCs - one with Athlon chip, one with Phenom

Logitech Squeezebox Boom - if you stream music at home with or without wires, this is a must-have gadget - the best sound quality I have ever heard from a portable device with no exceptions. Add even a modest sub and you have room-shaking power, though even without a sub the bass response is superb.

Will be moving house later this year so may well invest in some other kit - possibly add to the Squeezebox collection, as with the right kit you can configure them all to be playing the same music at the same time, or each can play a different selection.

Since I stopped using a Creative Zen player a few years back, haven't felt the need to get a portable MP3 player - my phone will handle that, plus I prefer not to move on foot outadoors wearing headphones. I save my mp3 playing for the car - have a Blaupunkt head unit connected to a 20GB portable HDD via USB cable at the rear of the head unit. No more CDs for me in the car.

Am also curious about MP3 turntables because I've never needed one - I have an old but powerful and sweet-sounding Technics amp that links my turntable and PC, and I can record vinyl straight to disk then process the sound file. Maybe its that modern amps don't cater for turntables so well as they tend not to have an inbuilt phono pre-amp, whereas the older amps do. The set-up I have gives me all the control I need over the quality of sound input. Conversely, I have a newer NAD amp with no phono stage, so had to buy one separately (with a USB connection) and connect to the amp and PC through that. Result: no end of hassle and poorer sound quality, so I switched back to the Technics.
