My alias is Conkers, I believe that we should encourage fellow Black Professionals in the IT industry to post problems, advice or fixes within this new forum. I also believe this may have the potential to become a valuable tool, in terms of generating business. My background is I am an Access / Visual Basic developer, who has also designed and developed web sites using applications ranging from Dreamweaver Ultra Dev to Front Page 2000. I am currently in the process of learing VB.NET.smoking-devil

K,
Is there anyway you could move this forum on to the main window. As I think we would generate more traffic and discusions that way. Also shortly I will be developing a software and advice website would be grateful if you could send me a Black Net Banner to put on this site.
Cheers K

Untiled,
I don't knowyour name or alias but I did receive your post and replyed to it. As I was saying I basically am a Database developer. Using applications ranging from Access/VB/VBA and sql server. Although there are many companies which need these services especially Visual Basic, you would be wise to start learning Visual Studio.Net as more and more companies will start to request, developers who can code in this environment. My advice to you would be to keep your hands in the VB side of things, but to start to learn VS.Net as it is an extremelypowerful application. The reason I started to code in vb then subsequently VBA, which is the coding environment to many applications of the microsoft suit is because the database requests I started to receive became more and more complex. With managers and End-users wanting more and more statistics, by utilizing VBA you open a whole new environment for coding your applications.
Also think outside the box don't limit yourself to one software, I have designed web sites using the dreamweaver and fireworks applications.

Djswing2000,
Access is good for up to 15 con current users, what I basically do when i am developing a database is to compact itinto a MDE version this stops End-users with a little knowledge ruining your database, by getting in the back end. Although an End-User with a little knowledge could hold down the shift key and get into the back end of your MDE, they cannot change any of the forms,VBA modules, reports etc. But they can look at the tables, I have a piece of code which disables the shift bypass key if you require it let me know and I will send it to you with an overview.
On another note if your installing your database on a companynetwork you must bear in mind that the database will run slow if it is put on your main network drive. The best thing to do is install your database on a separate partition like an S:\ drive for instant, this way you will not loose any of the functionality. Just create a short cut to the database and copy it to your respective end-users.
If you require anymore help let me know.

Ijexa,
Your quite right Access has many limitations in a Multi-user environment, including record locking, however if the total amount of End-users is quite small less then 10 for instant then it can serve a respectable purpose. Ideally and Oracle database would be the way to go or unix as these can handle 100's of concurrent users. You can also develop a VB front-end attached to aOracle back end, extremely robust andextremely scalable.smoking-devil
Also in Access 2000, I have noticed it has a facility called a Database splitter which allows you to separate data tables into a separate mdb file ( a "data" database). You place this file on a network share, and then link these tables into a copy of your database that otherwise contains only the queries, forms, reports, data access pages macros and vba modules needed for your application ( a "Code" Database). This will help the database run a lot quicker as it only needs to connect to the backend database to save & retrieve data.

niceone.gifConkers. I have a close brother who is an extremely valuable member of our crew. He is our leader in IT matters and knows his stuff and deep into technology of all kinds and presently heading a crucial piece of work for us.
He is extremely busy and trying to get him is like seeing the Queen, but I hope this is something he can contribute to. He is a Lynux junkie so be warned. But he was the first to educate us long time ago about the strategic importance of this stuff and one of the orginal cyber warriors for real.
He made the point that this is one of the few periods in our history where given the low entry costs of mastering this technology, what we can and must do if we are serious about real power.
So support what your doing down the line and going to encouage my man to spend what little time he has spare with us humble folk and giving you support in this most important of areas.
Me, I stick to the more simple things in life.niceone.gif
The phone call has been made and my man says he will pass through..

Hi,
I'm the associate that FredBlack referred to and I'd like to show some support for this initiative. niceone.gif
I've long been a believer that IT professionals of African origins needs to support each other. Particularly in matters of finding and securing employment as well as sharing skills and knowledge.
For my part, I am a highly experienced IT professonal with a multi-disciplinary background covering programming, network/system adminstration and support on Windows, Netware and Unix (mainly Solaris) platforms. I have done web development in both Domino and Java as well as database development on SQL Server and Sybase including Transact-SQL stored procedures. I am currently skilling up on Linux and have deployed it as the backbone of my home broadband network. I'll be looking for new employment in this new year.
Once again, I'd like to wish this endeavour every success and will be sure to pop in every now and then to offer what support and assistance I can.
Regards,
TechNoir

FredBlack & Technoir, hearing this brings a cyber smile to my face. We can and are often blowing away many IT professionals within blue chip companies. Lets keep this forum alive and encourage black coders to share their individual knowledge for the good of Blacknet.
I have a question I have recently acquired a copy of VS.net, I am in the process on trying to install it on my 2000 server. But dam this software as many little errors, the latest of which is a err0r 1305 associated error. Has anyone come across this error???

I'm not familiar with this particular software, so I can't give specific advice.
As a piece of general advice, Microsoft software tends to be finicky about the Service Pack level of the version of Windows it is being installed on. Be sure to have the recommended Service Pack installed.
