Ok, thatwindow when it extracts those other files, won't do anything else. You then need to use my computer to find where those files went and run setupD.EXE
They should all be in the same place where you saved the file you downloaded.

Another update. I acidentally turned off the win.98 PC. When I turned it back on, I tried again. This time this came up:
LHA's SFX 2.13L (c) Yoshi, 1991
Then a line appeared saying:
MTMCDAI. 386 Overwrite[Y/N]
I did not know what to do soI pressed Y.
Then another line appeared and said:
MTMCDAI.SYS Overwrite [Y/N], again I pressed Y.
Then a list of readme overwrites appeared. With the ENG overwrite, I pressed Y
The others I pressed N.
Then the SETUP.EXE overwrite [Y/N] appeared and I presed Y.
Then the same thing happened as before - I can't seem to do anything else. Any button I press, does not do anything.
Now you're going to tell me I've done something wrong aren't you?

Yeah ok. That file you downloaded is a self extracting file. So when you run it, all those other files are extracted from it.
So say I saved the ide158.exe file in c:\cd test and then run it.
Those files should be created in c:\cd test. So if you look in there with my computer you should find the program setupd.exe

As I was typing a reply, you sent yours soI read your last post afterI sent mine. Anyway I did exactly as you said, then an installation menu came up. One for readme the other for installation, another for exit. I entered installation then this came up:
On which drive would you like to install the CD-Rom device driver file?
C:\MTM_ (the underscore is flashing)
I pressed enter, then I followed your instructions. Then a window appeared telling me its being installed. Then another window appeared with the heading 'Complete!'. Then a list of copied and modified files came up, then it told me to reboot.
Did that then tried cd-rom and nothing!

Um...If that hasn't worked.
I don't know. It is a possibility that the cdrom is broken or that its connection has come loose.
I can't be a hundred percent sure, without seeing whats going on. But if it is not broken, then I am at a loss at what could be causing it.
Did a new icon even show up in your my computer, D: drive, or anything?
ps. I'm not gonna be around for a bit, so don't think I have deserted you if I don't answer.

Ok Nick. Thanks. I think eventually I am going to a have to buy a new tower. I'm not holding out much hope with the network card I'm afraid, because I genuinely don't see a way into the case, especially if you're right about the screws at the back. If there is a part can be snapped off somewhere, no doubt it would require the strength of Samson, because I cannot see a way to do it.
Perhaps some sort of factory machine moulded the case together so that no-one can get into it. I don't know.confused3
BTW is 'Tower' the right and officialword to describe it?
(reply when you can).

Um...yeah tower, base unit, "the actual computer". Most people in the business should understand what you want if you asked for one of the above.
But unless you really want a top spec machine, don't let anybody talk you into to paying big money.

And you can buy them seperately right? Only I am beginning to panic now, becauseI only just been trawling the net for about a couple of mins. and all I am seeing is the complete set up, (that is with the monitor/keyboards etc!).

All I want is a complete tower with everything in it!

Also, I came across the term, 'Computer Units', that sounds more official!

Hmm, yeah they are a bit tricky to hunt down arn't they. I have always built mine and my friends so I have never looked before to be honest.
But try dabs:-

They seem to have a few.

Thanks Nick. The site you gave was the first I saw with whatI wanted! Knew they were going to be pricey, but I never thought that much! My friend says her husband got one for about £200. Time to give her a call methinks!

Yeah, thats about as cheap as you are going to get in the mainstream. You can get cheaper without all the frills and go faster stripes. Give him a ring and find out.

Thanks for being my personal FREE technical advisor!! niceone.gif
I'm going to have to do some serious saving now, and when I finally get it I'll pm you, if you don't mind and if you're still around, - (it's going to take a while lol!), to let you know how I got on. Apart from the saving, I think I can manage putting up the tower though!
Slight aside:'him' isa her!
