i need more memory. i am tiold it will make my pc boot up quicker. my pc used to boot up quick but i have added quite a bit to it. my ps has ddr 256 memory. not sure make.

how much am i alooking to spend and will it cost much for me to let them add the extra memory at the shops say dixons etc?

More memory won't make your pc boot up faster. In order for a lack of memory to slow down your pc, it needs to be filled up. So the last 5-10 seconds of loading "might" fill it up, it might not. Usually only performance whilst using the pc is effected by ram.

If you are using 2000 or XP, right click the task bar and select "task manager".

Down in the bottom right hand corner, there is a field called "mem usage" if this is below 256,000K, you are not using all your existing ram yet and adding more will hardly make a difference if at all. If you are using over 256,000k then some more ram might be a good idea.

Much better to look at any applications that seem to start up on there own that you don't need, or think about re-installing windows.

However if you still want to upgrade you will need to buy some ram. Heres a good quality stick for about £25

However if you are not confident on fitting it yourself, I don't know how much they will charge you in a shop for the ram and fitting. See if you can find somebody you know who isn't shy on whipping the side of a case off and get them to do it.

But personally I wouldn't trust any of those monkeys in dixon's or similar shops with my machine.One wrong move and they could pull a pipe off and send water squirting every where!!!
