HTTP == HyperText Transport Protocol

HTML == HyperText Markup Language

XML == eXtensible Markup Language

LIMS == Laboratory Information Management System

Now the following jargon reads like some wierd British form of the English language to me.

Code:
bespoke content management system and marking with XML tags
You're making me do too much work here SoooFresh. I never heard of that LIMS. For a minute I thought you were talking about the Lunar Excursion Module. But this stuff should be easy for someone who said PHP and MySQL were BORING. Do you expect me to go out on a LIM for someone accusing computers of being BORING.

@Umb

LOL

anyway

i am sorry but it is boring, but in my part time job i shot myself in thefoot and eagerly volunteered myself for a project ( i want to have a nice CV when i graduate)

now the project is that we are trying to move a journal online......that journal is used by health professionals and used as guidance in drug formulation and dispensing.

now they did say they will train me in XML and dm coding?????..........but i dont want to go their as a chump

hence since you are left brainer ( and i am not cause i am a woman) can you explain the definitions you gave.

thankyouuuuuuu

"dm coding" could be database management coding

Computers on the internet or a local area network are von Neumann machines shooting bits at each other. But if the computers have different protocols then it is like a woman that only understands German talking to a man that only understands Chinese. HTTP is the protocol standardized for the World Wide Web so because it became so common it is used for more than just the Web now. You shouldn't have to know details about HTTP. I have an Apache web server talking to my Firefox browser. Since the software is written with HTTP as the default there isn't much to do besides type "http://" when I communicate with the server.

The XML is what you will have to deal with. It tells your browser how to create a page and display the information. If you click VIEW at he top of your browser and SOURCE or PAGE SOURCE in the menu that comes down, it should show you the source code of the page you are currently looking at. TAGS are instructions to the browser about what to do with the information inside the tags.

Code:
<b> would be an opening tag telling the browser to make the text bold. The browser would BOLD the text until it encounters the ending tag </b>. Ending tags will have a slash in them. So the more sophisticated stuff you do the more, and more complex tags you must learn. I had a simple website up that I used HTML to create. I don't know where HTML leaves off and XML starts but, of couse, as computers have gotten more powerful since HTML was first created people wanted to do more stuff.
So it sounds like you will be doing what I'm working on with PHP and MySQL just applyin it to a drug datbase. Is this journal currently in written form or already in a computer readable format? If it is written then fields need to be defined in the database. Name of drug, generic and proprietary, chemical composition maybe, ilnesses used for, side effects, drugs it conflicts with. All this data will have to be entered. So this database must be accessable from multiple stations with browsers and you must write the code to display the relevant info and take feedback from the user. If they must update the datbase you may have to deal with record locking so people don't screw up each others work.

What is a CV? A car.

A chemist huh...well, you certainly have my respect. I hated chemistry in college, although it was mandatory for engineers in my program up to a slight introduction on O-chem. Those are the worst grades on my transcript by far.

Anyhow, we calla CV by both names, curriculum vitae and a resumé.

It is termed CV if your career is based mostly out of academia like professors, research scientists, or students finishing undergraduate or graduate programs. It is termeda resuméwhen you are a working professionalin industry that is typically not associated with academia.

Thoth

thankyou sir

chemistry is a brilliant subject, it is a shame it is not pushed as a career for black........no no no now its "i wanna be a rap star".....KMT

anyway

back to XML........yep i understand it now,

heck i even read on HTML and even attempted to try it for developing mypage.htm

but i failed miserably..........went on notepade.....taged <html>, blah , blah but it still would not work............any suggestion any one..........maybe Umbra, since as a woman with a dysfunctional left side thinking of the brain.....i need help

also the good thing about xml is that the tags can be individual defined, hence helpful for drug names whether html is predefined tags.....html is for display, xml is for describing data...i think

There you go, have a look at the code hope it helps...
</html>

There you go, copy an paste this into the notepad, save it as .htm or .html file, and voila you have your first html page...

Though I wouldn't worry myself that much about using notepad, there are tonnes of software to help you create your page, Dreamweaver been the top of the list...

@Blackthough

I know about dreamweaver, but i am one of the few that preferes to start things from scratch rather then get it in a ready made box............I like raw materials

anyway........its looking okay, bit clinical............but will get the midas touch soon.

build it, get other software display the data............might call it Blaqnet.......their is no patent on that..........LOL

thanks for the info
