Don't have any personal experience with it. I'm still using Windows 2000 when I must do Windows and Linux otherwise. But Google turned up this:

Microsoft genuine advantage is a software authentication system that has been implemented to specifically verify whether or not your windows installation is legitimate. (Legally Purchased)

You WILL need to install this "trojan" on your PC if you want to receive software updates from microsofts"windows update" website.

Do not install this software if you did not purchase your the windows software on your PC as your IP address will be logged on their servers and could possibly be used against you in the future.

Glossary

Trojan: A piece of software that can install itself on your PC and compromise your pc security (i.e. Log keystrokes, take snapshots of screens, record images from an attached webcam without your prior knowledge or consent)

IP address: Your computers unique identifier on the internet (Looks similar to this, 129.23.45.23)

There is another way of getting around the 'microsoft genuine adv'.

Follow the instructions below:

Since July the 29th, Microsoft released the " Genuine Advantage" update for its Windows ® Operating System. This update makes windows legallity validation obligatory when trying to acces updates through the microsoft download portal or the windows update feature in Internet Explorer.

The following provides a working fix which disables the validation check and once again grants users of a "less legal" system acces to the windows update feature withing IE without having to validate

What to do:
Go to Windows Update and install the Windows Genuine Advantage ActiveX Control, but don't click 'Continue' when installation is done.

Close IE, re-open it and hit Manage Add-Ons... under Tools.

Highlight Windows Genuine Advantage and Disable it.

Close IE again, then go back to WindowsUpdate. It'll say that the site is trying to use an ActiveX that is currently disabled. Ignore it. Ignore it while you're downloading Updates like normal
