Better Yet
Time for the world’s best music player to take the stage for another encore. In 30GB and 60GB[suP](1)[/suP] models that hold up to 15,000[suP](2)[/suP] songs, full-color album art and up to 25,000 photos[suP](3)[/suP], the new iPod makes the most of your music and more. Yeah, you’ve heard that tune before. Only now, you can watch it, too. With support for up to 150 hours[suP](4)[/suP] of video and a 2.5-inch color display, the new iPod lets you take music videos and TV shows on the road.

More and Less
The new iPod boasts up to 20 hours of battery life[suP](5)[/suP], five hours more than before. Plus, you get a bigger display and one more iPod color — sleek black. But here’s the kicker: At under half an inch thin, the new 30GB iPod takes up about 45 percent less room than the original iPod. Even the new 60GB model is 10 percent thinner than the fourth-generation 20GB iPod. More features in less space? Sounds like iPod.

Hold Everything
Now you can put all your music in your pocket and still have room for, well, practically everything else. Catch up on your reading with audiobooks. Browse your memories with photo slideshows, complete with music. Watch video podcasts, music videos and your favorite TV shows. Consult your calendar or look up an email address. Even check the time in another city or time your fastest lap. The new iPod keeps it all close at hand.

Spin Some Tunes

The Apple Click Wheel gives you access to your entire music, photo and video library — from one thumb. Control volume and browse using the touch-sensitive surface. Play. Pause. Rewind and fast-forward. Rate your favorites. Create playlists on the go. Launch photo slideshows. The Click Wheel puts everything at your fingertips, so you can keep your eyes and ears on the music.

Sync, Look and Listen
Playing your iPod is only half the fun. Try filling it with downloads from the iTunes Music Store. Choose from over 2 million songs, 25,000 podcasts, 2,000 music videos or your favorite ABC and Disney television shows, download them to your Mac or PC and sync them to your iPod. Add an optional audio cable to play music from the iPod to your home stereo or use an optional S-video cable with iPod to play VJ on your TV. You can perform the same big-screen feat with iPod photo slideshows. Oh, and you can do it all from across the room using the optional Universal Dock and handy new Apple remote.

  1. 1GB = 1 billion bytes; actual formatted capacity less.
  2. Song capacity is based on four minutes per song and 128-Kbps AAC encoding.
  3. Photo capacity is based on iPod-viewable photos transferred from iTunes.
  4. Video capacity is based on 4 minutes per H.264 750-Kbps video combined with 128-Kbps audio.
  5. Up to 20 hours of battery life refers to 60GB model and music playback.
  • Rechargeable batteries have a limited number of charge cycles and may eventually need to be replaced. Battery life and number of charge cycles vary by use and settings.

I rip CDs and make mp3 files and play them thru my stereo when I want long random play and not concerned about high music quality. When I really want to listen I play CDs. I don't have a portable mp3 player. If I was going to get one I would probably buy a portable CD player with mp3 playback capability. I know it isn't as cool as an iPod but I care about functionality and money. If I put a bunch of money in a gadget it better do something important.

A computer geek friend of mine has a girl friend who owns an iPod. I don't know which model but I don't think it is a recent one that does video. He has to mess with it almost once a month to get something working. She loves it when its working.

I would not put up with proprietary music formats though. Somewhere I have a magazine with an article that converts by playing the music and recording the analog to encode it as mp3. When I find it I'll post it.

An mp3 encoded CD holds 4 hours of music. There are CD jewel cases that hold 4 CDs in the space of 1 regular jewel case. 4 in the case and 1 in the player is 30 hours of music and it should all fit in a fanny pack.

It is all a matter of what you want to do with the tech. I have been waiting for a good Linux PDA with a 30 gig disk. I could put 5 gig of music on that and do important stuff with the rest. I must be olde fashioned, using 30 gig for nothing but music seems ludicrous to me when I probably won't be away from home long enough to listen to a significant fraction of it.

One Gigabye of mp3 is 16 hours of music, equal to 11 90 minute cassette tapes. I never carried that many tapes with my walkman.

Only problem with MP3 CDs is that you can't edit your playlists or even the order of play.

I like the songs on my playlists to flow together and tell a story or at least be similar. I can't have crunk-slowjam-reggae-crunk-soca-soul It's just silly.

Then you need an MP3 player. The one you posted is good but I'm not sure you need THAT much capacity. 15000 songs is a bit excessive and that sort of memory costs more money. Scale it down and explore other makes besides apple.

Some of my home made non-mp3 disk are recorded in a desired order and I put the same kind of music on a single disk.

I do a lot of random play but I don't want stuff that clashes. It is selected by my mood at the time.

Back in my 20s playing music on LPs was a lot more work, I'm not willing to fiddle around nearly as much as I was then.

Gotta have good speakers though.

I used to have a Creative Nomad Zen mp3 player with 20GB disk space, and used most of it....but found that there was no point in carrying around that much music. Now I havea much smaller player (4GB) and download playlists onto it - works fine for me.

What you do depends on your listening habits.....if you have long spells during each day where you can listen to music, then a larger disk size makes sense. If its short periods, then I'd go for a smaller unit and change the content more frequently as its easier. Never thought about having music and video on the same unit, and I don't think that would work for me. Do you want something as a storage unit, or primarily a playback device? If its storage, go for disk size; if playback, smaller makes sense.

On brands, I have always been a fan of Creative products - they have a good selection size and price wise, and the sound quality (IMO) beats iPod. I bought my youngest one of their Flash-based players recently, and was amazed at the depth of the sound - good bass even with the standard headphones (which are usually rubbish). There are plenty of choices these days though, so browse around...there is usually no real need toshell outmegabucks, unless you really want to.

Mind your wants, 'cos somebody wants your mind

Hiya

I have the new video ipod and I have to say I'm impressed. The picture quality is brilliant and soon you'll be able to watch TV on it too.
