For those not aware.....worth having a look at this....offers the same package as MS Office - word processor, presentation, drawing, spreadsheet, and database - with a similar look and feel so switching is easy....all completely free via download (can get CDs) and open-source....been using for about two years and never a problem....just passing on....

Yes and yes. You can use Word as a default format for saving and opening. Same for PowerPoint, Excel, Access.
Will also save as .pdf which can be handy for saving formatted text.

Use the 'Add/Remove Programs' facility in Control Panel in Windows.
benefits disadvantages
Benefits:
|
Quote:
.....similar on-screen appearance to the MS equivalent so easy to switch;
.....similar functionality to MS equivalent, so little new to learn - minor differences are (IMO) improvements;
......will open files created in MS equivalent, and will save in them as default if you wish, so doesn't prevent other MS users opening files you create
.....save document files straight to .pdf format (handy if you use it)
......open-source basis, so you could (if you had the know-how) modify it yourself;
......free upgrades - a worldwide community works on it;
......no hassle with licences restricting how many machines you can load the same software onto - the main reason I won't use MS stuff unless I have to;
.....it ain't MS, so Mr Gates doesn't get any more of my money
Disadvantages
....it ain't MS, so maybe a little 'fear factor' to overcome (or maybe deprogramming niceone.gif)
....a little bit of work to get it unless you download (which takes a bit of time if you don't have broadband) - is available via CD for a small charge but why pay? Once downloaded can be saved to CD to load on other machines
....none other encountered in two years + of usage.
In my opinion, it is as good as it looks. Worth a try.

Still going strong with this, to the point where Word is less familiar to me than OpenOffice now. Give it a go.

ARGGGGGH!
This Open Office 2.0 has been the bane of my life for a year now .lol. The spreadsheets aren't compatible with Word, it dosen't convert any Microsoft files well AT ALL. Ok, I don't like Microsoft but come on... Had to battle with it a few months back as I thought I could do some work on it, spent all night typing only to have it stuck on the computer as it messed up everything when I tried to use it on excel. As said it dosen't convert either way too well at all. Can't use a Microsoft server, or what ever its called, and a incompatible program with it... better off dumping it all together and using Apple.
Particually annoying as I have people come in at work who are used to Word and have MS office programs to print or veiw hence the...
Black Lion is... Agu Bu Oji in Igbo, Simba nyeusi in Swahili, the name of a hospital in Addis Adaba the capital of Ethiopia.

Since it uses Java, I had to wrestle with the Java updates.
which sometimes eat up the RAM space on my computer as a task very little for other applications.
Overall its a safe bet once you get past that.
