The amount of young people I know taking IT certifications to get on the ladderI was thinking wouldn't it be nice if the established among us could get some hardware together to setup aCisco and Microsoft lab environment to give them some free practical assistance to help them on their way - guess we'd need the real estate...any takers?

Any lab!!, just somewhere to get some practical experience. Being in the game my lab was in my bedroom just would be nice to have a freely accessible lab for the next generation of IT academics - surely the job is to make the passage easier for them...and I know I have spare kit to donate?

Ok, what if we charged fr the privilege...any takers?

My first computer lab was in my bedroom too. I had built a Heathkit H-8 after I joined IBM.

The game has changed a lot since 1978. That kit cost me $400 for FOUR KILOBYTES of memory and I still had to solder it together. bighairlol That soldering does make you kind of intimate with the internal workings though. And no hard drive.

What do you think of people getting used computers thru ebay? I have gotten a Gateway and I'm waiting on a Dell. The Dell is 733 MHz with 256 Meg of RAM. My winning bid was $24 and shipping was $21. I don't think it is too bad for less than $50. The trouble with used computers off ebay is a machine can look pristine in the picture but it can be full of dust and the hard drive can have 24,000 hours of operation on it.

I took a C course at a community college in the 80s that used much less capable machines and Linux now comes with a C compiler, plus Perl, plus Awk, plus Gimp and maybe blender, etc., etc.

Incognito, I am all ears. I would like to become a Cisco Engineer. My friend completed the course just earlier this year. I have worked a lot with the technology but I only hold Microsoft Certifications. I know I need to get off the ground with respect to Cisco, but have been unable to thus far.

TheDogon

I've always tried to help on a one to one but if I'm honest I haven't gone out and sold myself it's really been word of mouth from friends who know me - but I do try and send my old study guides to Africa.

Anyone with the desire only needs the materials, it would be cool if our 'youthclubs ' had IT workshops along with the usual sport facilities. We have enough IT nous among us to avoid having to spend our money going through these corporate bodies to get on the ladder - guess we need to find the youthclubs first.
