I don't believe in bleeding edge technology any more.
I would wait 6 months to a year before I got the latest operating system from Macro$cam. I have the current issue of CPU: Computer Power User. It says you should have a minimum of 512 megabytes though if you are a serious user you should have 2 Gig.
Maybe I'm old and old fashioned but there was a time when I went to multi-million dollar companies and their super-mincomputers only had half a megabyte and they were running these machines 24 hours a day. If their system was down and I couldn't get them back up in a couple of hours they were mad as hell and calling my manager.
These computers are so fantastically powerful now I think Intel and AMD have a problem with coming up with reasons why most people need to buy this much processing power. There is no limit to how sophisticated a game can be made to consume processing power like there is no tomorrow. At least until we can recreate the holodecks from Star Trek. But this magazine says AMD and Intel are cooperating with Macro$cam so to me it looks like some software company is incorporating ridiculous, cpu cycle consuming features to justfy people needing the latest greatest wares from the chip makers.
It's about THE MONEY.
I would rather buy used computers and oriental rugs. The technology of rugs isn't advancing every month but they don't depreciate by 75% in the first year either.

I'd say there's little point in buying it just because it's new. If your need for processing power demands it or your system isn't coping now: maybe, though I'd still wait 6 months to a year. Unless you're a heavy gamer or processing lots of heavy graphics (in which case buy a Mac), XP and even Windows 2000 are perfectly adequate. There's other things you could do (RAM upgrade, better graphics card, maybe even a new motherboard) before laying out for a new operating system.
And before you buy MS Office, at least take a look at OpenOffice 2.0 - does everything that Office does, but no need to buy as it's free. Thread with a link elsewhere on here, I think.

Ladyday, do you not know anyone who has Office and would be willing to copy it for you? Yes, i know it's 'illegal', but a colleague at work did this for me, and afterhaving 'Works' for the last5 years, the relief to have Office where i can readattachments that are sent to me and download docs off of the internet; i'm overjoyed!!!
Also, try looking on Amazon's 'marketplace' or ebay to see if you can get a cheap or used CD.
