Your right about linux documentation and basic function being down right time consuming in figuring out.
But since you mentioned computer should be used for power, I see computers use and operation system use related to what started things in the first place, communication.
Communication in the Windows world is everywhere, they have built up a high degree of professionals and layman in various fields to help make Microsoft bigger and bigger without direct input from Microsoft or Intel or AMD.
Even if it's at a price its a price for what is considered reliable today and best of all tomorrow and there is everyone around you connected or ready to learn and share in solving this problem.
Linux on the other hand is crafted in the hands of learned freelancers who eventually had a taste of Windows and now as you state show off their skills. But communication isn't considered a geeks favorite tool. It shows as you mention in documentation. Because of that, this might be the reson Linux and the Desktop is where it is now.
The roads have diverged between linux users and those of the new generation. With Ipods and such, operating systems are becoming more entertainment systems and Windows is leagues ahead of Linux in this regard. This is what the average user is wanting and wanting in abundance.
It took me hours to get CD-RW tools to work on Linux, compiling and documentation, searching the web for answers, etc with Windows I dont have to say....
