after much umming and ahing i finally decided to wuss out and get my toe wet by going for this model

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Creative-Zen...;s=electronics

its still creative but much cheaper. at least if it breaks down after a few months i won;t have thrown away too much money!! If it works out OK i will go for one with a hgher GB. But this one holds up to 500 songs which is plenty for now, or i may go for the 2gb model which is about £60.

I bought my niece one of those £50 Creative Zen Plus for Christmas and she loves it. She prefers it more than the Apple iPod and Apple Nano that she has owned in the past.
I have just sold my Nano and another cheap music player that was given to me by somebody who didn't want their own and i am thinking about getting a Creative this time and i own a Apple Mac laptop.
This is the Creative model that i am looking at but if i get it will be in white and green.
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Creative-Pla...1173798462=8-8
I am looking at the 30GB model as well.
The Nano worked fine but i fancy a change. It is my birthday coming up soon and any money that i get i will put towards my new MP3 player.
I will also consider Samsung, Zicplay, Archos and iRiver MP3/MP4players as well. I think that if i can get a decent one that plays MP4 music that will swing it for me.

There is one big drawback to the Creative Zen Plus and that is that is battery power operated. If that was not the case i would pick up one of those myself.

I never buy anything of value from Ebay anymore unless it comes with a receipt or delivery note/invoice from a shop. A lot of these sellers just lie they tell you that you can get warranty and when you try to without a proper receipt you are stuck. It is safe to buy an Apple iPod on Ebay without a receipt though as Apple do not really care if you have a receipt or not. You can also buy an extra years warranty as well if you purchase a model that is under one years old. Not all manufacturers are the same though and some like Creative demand a store receipt/invoice for warrany purposes.

thanks Rachie, but i have yet again changed my mind about the creative brand i want to get!! i am going to start out with the 1gb for under 40 quid http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/...A3P5ROKL5A1OLE.

value for money-wise it ain;t that great as getting a higher GB would work out cheaper if you are looking at £ per GB, but due to tight financial constraints(!) i can;t afford any more. Plus i am also going by * customer reviews and it gets an average of 4 stars based on 141 reviews, so not bad. And for the price and the fact that it is creative it is OK. if this one performs well, i will move on to a higher GB (wallet permitting!) i get paid next wednesday, so once i hit that "submit order" button, no going back!! (unless i change my mind AGAIN between now and next wednesday which, i have to say, is very likely!)

* One thing i have to say though, with regard to MP3s and reviews: I wish people would wait a few months before they review it, and not just a couple of days. OF COURSE they work great in the first week, its after a few months teething problems start to show. So most reviews are inaccurate as some who gave it a great review at first will come back a couple of months later complaining about how it malfunctioned and they can;t get it fixed!!

Well the Zicplay player was absolutely rubbish and it was faulty as well so i returned it and got one of these. I haven't got it yet but it should come some time this week.

You can buy a 2GB one cheaper from Amazon but i just wanted one in those colours.
I also got these headphones as the ones i ordered originally were just to big for my ears.
I got these from Amazon for £26 and used a gift voucher that i had to pay for it.
http://www.htfr.com/more-info/MR164961

I know what you mean about those reviews. Some people even give their reviews for some things even before they have bought the product and it makes no sense.

We are really living in rip of Britain as well. Amazon in the US are selling the mp3 player i bought for $88 but it is double the price in the UK. I paid for mine before i saw it so much cheaper in the US otherwise i would have got a friend to mail it over to me.

Buying new batteries often for your player is going to cost you maybe more in the end than if you just went for the one you intended to do so in the beginning. I am looking into buying my niece some rechargeable batteries on Ebay now as she has spent to much money in batteries. The Nano plus is a very good player though.

i received my creative nano on saturday and so fr so good!!! very easy to use, except i will be ripping from windows instead of the cretive software, as with the creative you have to input all the info yourself. on windows it coms up autromatically. if it continues to perform well, i will upgrade to the 8gb.

might get new headphones though as the ones it came with are a bit big for my lil ol' ears!!

You just have to have the olde geek/nerd perspective.

bighairlol

I just bought an Archos PMA400 off eBay.

I checked out iPods years ago and I went into the Apple Store with my Panasonic walkman. The annoying things about cassette is obviously the songs are always in the same sequence. After playing a tape enough my brain would automatically start playing the next song when one was ending. It's a strange phenomenon.

But as an olde computer geek the idea of a 10 gig hard drive for nothing but music is totally repugnant. So I wanted a Linux PDA with a hard drive that could also play music.

A bit of history here:

IBM introduced a mainframe called a 3033 in 1978. It cost $3,000,000. In January 1983 Byte Magazine did an article of benchmarks on numerous computers in multiple languages. The 3033 was the fastest in assembly language, PL/I and COBOL. I downloaded a C cross-compiler a few days ago and got it working last night.

Code:
Computer Language Seconds

IBM 3033 Assembly 0.0078 100% fastest CPU+SW
Pent 2 300 MHz C_GNU 0.0148
IBM 3033 PL/I 0.036 21.7% efficient
Archos PMA400 C_GNU 0.0538 TI OMAP5910
IBM 3033 COBOL 0.0824 9.5% efficient
The Archos with a Texas Instruments processor beat the old IBM running COBOL. It lost to PL/I and assembly but it can play MP3s. It also has twice as much memory as the IBM could take and probably has more on-line storage. What mainframes had 30 gig on-line in 1978? This stuff is incredible.

It has wireless capability and records and plays videos. I've logged into BlackNetUK with the built in opera browser, it's usable but annoying because of the small screen. It plays audio books with the DRM security scheme though I have bypassed those with an mp3 sound capture program. It also has a microphone to record and with a mini-camera and the proper hook up it would be more convenient than my digital camera. Now I'll have to figure out this Qtopia interface. A geeks work is never done.

Do you know anything about Qtopia Dogon?

quick edit to my last post- creative nano still going great, but i said that when it finally pegged out i would get an 8gb. But whn i checked out amazon the 30gb worked out cheaper than the 8!! so i am going to end up getting the original one i was going to get in the first place lol but the lil nano is doing just fine!!#

i even ripped some old percy sledge and vandellas from napster!!! good to have my childhood back, although i miss the scratchy vinyl sound!!
