Greetings Techies,

I'm having a problem attaching a music file to one of my threads. The file I have is too big so I'm trying to compress it into a zip file.

Howdo Icompress it?

You use a program like winrar or winzip which can be downloaded. Try googling it.

I'm assuming here that you have either Winzip or the Winrar programme to compress this file that you have?

I would suggest that out of the two, I would use WinRaR as this is a more recent and more popular compression programme as used by users..

If so, to compress a file into either format first highlight the files that you want compressing using the left mouse button.

If its more than one file you want to compress, e.g mp3 files of an album etc, hold down the 'ctrl' button whilst clicking on each file using the left mouse button.

After that click on any of the files highlighted using the right mouse button.

This should bring up some options. Look down and you should see a option called 'add to archive'.

Click on the 'add to archive' button. From there, it gives you the option of renaming your file here if you wish. Now press 'ok' and the compression should now start. Hope this may be of help to you.

For these compression programmes, you could either go to:

www.winzip.com or www.winrar.com

Any problems, just holla.

Thanks guys. The only thing I don't get is the add to archive option. Will it only show only if I have winzip or winrar?

I've compressed it now but the file is still too big. It didn't reduce by much. That was winzip. I'll try Winrar but what version should I use?

A music file like an MP3 is already compressed and won't compress much more. To make it significantly smaller it might have to be reencoded at a lower bit rate but that would reduce sound quality.

um

How did you get on and which thread was it?

If you havent done it, why dont you add the fileto a file sharing site, then copy the link from there to the thread.

Hey Le Moor,

Thanks for checking in. WINRAR didn't compress by enough either. Thanks for the suggestion of the file sharing site.

The thread was Freestyle Friday over in the Entertainment Forum. I haven't had any feedback so I don't think anyone's interested though.

@All: Thanks again all the same
