I've been interested in 3d printers ever since i saw the first video of a device printing something. i mean come on these things are amazing, ok they aren't as amazing as they eventually will be but the fact is the concept is sound. The problem is if you ever wanted one you'd have to shell out the 30-100k$ for a unit. Well no more, let me introduce you to Desktop Factory...
This little bady is the first 3d printer (non homemade) commercially available that will be retailing for $5,000. Ok no it isn't quite inkjet priced lol but then again this things gonna be amazing. They've already presold the first 5000 of them which was their entire test run, but according to the company they intend to have the pricing down to around a thousand dollars within the next 4 years. Their is a drawback though, apparently the machine uses a nylon/aluminum/glass mixture to create gray objects with some jagged edges and sandy finish. But imagine this is only the first of its kind to hit these low prices, imagine in 10 years.
Stop for a moment and picture going to a site paying for a pair of glasses via paypal, clicking print and as if magically, the printer with its different component gels, sprays out the glass, and frames in full color and designs. (Imagine the huge torrent indexes of downloadable printable products

)
Ok we're no where near that far, but the fact is thats the path that seems to be developing, and if the technology and development can keep at its current pace we might just end up reaching that future. Printable products right at home... who knows maybe they'll figure some biological way to provide the machine with basic elements (carbon, etc) and we can have our own food replicators like in startrek, yes i know i'm dreaming but isn't that the point of looking towards the future
