The console itself from the early days was very well marketed and i remember Toys r us being sold out within a day when the slim version of it was released in Winter 2004.
all games are heavily marketed and turn out to be duplicates of games of the same genre e.g. GTA III,VCS,LC&LCS(only Vice City & San Andreas were much different). below are my observations/experiences with PS2
1)they are designed to last between 9-15 months based on an average gameplay time of about at least 15 hours per week.(none will last for more than 18 months(please correct me if i am wrong most ps2 fans will be on their second or third playstation console)at which time the DVD laser reader will wear out
2)by this time you feel compelled to by a new one since you have a substantial collection of games by month 10(see below) to c/fwd to your next playstation
3)PS2 games are generally reasonably priced and well marketed(e.g.Killzone,Battlefield2,PES6) but something just keeps you coming back for more. Thats because there are only very highly emphasised but small differences between them and the main selling points seem to be marginal improvements in graphics from the prequel e.g GTA VC then GTA VCS
4)PS1 games are compatible on the PS2 console and i guess the same is true for PS2 games on the PS3.
bearing this in mind Playstation may be a victim of its own success since it would be hard to make serious improvements to its Ps2 bestsellers like GTA San Andreas.Sony would be put to task to release games comparable Gears of war(XBOX 360)or Halo(XBOX360) how much better can GTA get?

I disagree re san andreas - and the new gta is out very shortly.
